The Saudis can buy the best equipment in the world and it would not matter. Their common soldiers and pilots thus far have demonstrated no real competence or martial spirit. their performance in Yemen has been abysmal. The reality is that they are unwilling to die on behalf of the vile, corrupt Saudi “royals”. Soon the wealth and brutal repressions will not be able to stop the inevitable. Islamic culture is not compatible with the values, institutions and practices of modernity. The chronic violence and instability in the Mideast is the result of Islamic culture’s inability to transform or respond to the challenge of modernity. Despite the oil wealth, “Saudi” Arabia is a poor investment.

I agree with your post but one exception. Saudi’s are indeed NOT warriors but I don’t think it has to do totally with the Saudi Family. I think it literally is their OLDEST problem brought to them by their “Prophet” Mr. Mo. Namely, Mr. Mo decreed that it’s “ok” to marry your first cousin. Over a thousand years later we know beyond doubt that the cumulative weight of that one decree causes brain dysfunction and IQ’s so low they can’t grasp the simplest concepts.

So, by now, their inability to fight is baked into the cake and there is nothing they can do about it. They would be better off with a core group of Saudi officers with a high IQ if they could find them and a mercenary military.

France has the same problem, albeit for different reasons, thus they created the FFL to fight all their dirty little wars. The North Vietnamese had Soviet pilots in their fighters for years.

You may not have noticed but there hasn't yet been an “ arab spring” in a country ruled by a Royal dynasty
If only Assad was a king...

So we sell them $100 billion in weapons and station thousands of contractors over there to maintain and operate them
The alternative was that Russia and China do’ it
I don't see the downside
Ive read the new prince and future king is a bit rough around the edges as a leader
If he can spin this military investment into a native military- industrial-technical industry job creating Saudi empire, then young Arabs not born into the upper class just may have alternative future lifestyles than they do now
It sure is worth trying since we are living with the failed Bush Doctrine of invade muslim countries- replace their leaders.write a western style constitution and try to let corrupt politicians and scholars rule - and occupy with US military troops until hearts and minds are changed

Islamic culture is not compatible with the values, institutions and practices of modernity.

“How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilization of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilization of ancient Rome.”

A quote from an 1899 book by Winston Churchill, "The River War", in which he describes Muslims he apparently observed during Kitchener's campaign in the Sudan

Very good assessment. I have seen some of the videos of the Saudi Army in Yemen also. They are fish in a barrel and have zero combat acumen even with equipment that mirrors some of ours. I think they know the sea of oil riches can only last so long and that they are petrified of Iran let alone of internal disruption. I don’t think it is wise, though, to be big brother of their kingdom.
