The "investigations" of Trump were Comey's "insurance policy." Phony "investigations" that he announced to the press and to Congress in front of the cameras. He was "investigating" Trump and the Russians, and he would continue to "investigate" for years.
If fired, Comey knew (as is happening right now) that the media and the Democrats would scream bloody murder.
Comey didn't think President Trump would call his bluff.
He guessed wrong.

Comey was whip sawing both the Left and the Right. It was imperative that the FBI be de-politicized and fast. Chopping off the head will leave a mark on the Obama connected who infest every government department.

I had a watchmaker work for me for several years and he developed a 'drinking' problem which began to cost me money. He always kept about 10 watches or clocks disassembled as his "insurance" that I wouldn't fire him. I called his bluff, too.
