Trump To Turkey: We’re Taking Raqqa, And The Kurds Are Coming With US

President Donald Trump plans to smash the Islamic State’s final bastion in Syria, and he wants the Kurds’ help in doing so despite push back from Turkish allies.

Trump plans to inform Turkey’s President Recep Tayyip Erdogan of his controversial plan to retake Raqqa, ISIS’s de facto capital, when the Turkish leader visits Washington later this month, according to Foreign Policy magazine.

The administration’s move would help Trump accomplish his goal of finally defeating ISIS, but could also further alienate Turkey, a key NATO ally in the region. The main concern surrounds the use of Syrian Kurdish forces, specifically the YPG, in the offensive. YPG forces have ties to the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK), which is considered a terrorist group by both the U.S. and Turkey.

If Turkey takes Raqqa, they won’t leave.

It’s good news that President Trump seems to be cutting them out.

Erdogan is a pal of Obama’s, but he is NOT our ally, and never has been.

Good move. The Kurds are the only reliable group there.

Glad to see Trump stand up to Erdogen. Erdogen is no friend to U.S. or Europe.

That went out the window in this particular case when Turkey said they might attack US Forces if they took kurds with them. Trump is right to tell them in no uncertain terms exactly how the cow is gonna eat the cabbage.
Its a shot across Turkeys bow that it would be damned serious trouble for them to attack US forces.

“What ever happened to not telegraphing to the enemy your moves?”

Puleeze!

President Trump didn’t announce WHEN we were taking Raqqa.

Anything to pick & poke at President Trump lately.

Seems Erdogan’s interests will become increasingly aligned with Russia’s - at least up to a point.

And to that, I say - I don’t care. I don’t view Russia as an enemy.

Rather, I see the West’s elites and their alignment with Sunni Islam as the enemy.

South Front (an SAA-friendly media organisation) have this round-up of recent operations which we armchair generals may find useful.

https://southfront.org/syrian-war-report-may-8-2017-govt-forces-prepare-for-large-operation-in-desert-syria/

The Raqqa offensive gets a mention, also the latest rename of Al Queda in Syria (to HTS) and the likely offensive to relieve Deir Ezzor from Palmyra.

Deir Ezzor is a critical war aim. It stands athwart any goal of splitting Syria to put a Qatar pipeline through to Europe.

This is why ISIS (and the former White House) were so keen to take it, even to the point of the USAF strafing SAA positions and acting as ISIS’s airforce.

"What ever happened to not telegraphing to the enemy your moves?"

Nowhere in this article by the daily caller is anyone from the Trump administration quoted as saying that we are teaming up with the Kurds to take Raqqa. There is one quote and it says that this situation (ISIS and the assault on Raqqa) has been a high priority for the administration during transition discussions. Trump is not telegraphing the enemy his moves, this is a paper reporting on events and then speculating on what Trump will do, not what Trump will actually do. Most likely he will team up with the Kurds and do this. It's not exactly breaking news though. The only breaking news in this article is the speculation that Erdogan will be told to his face that this is what we're doing.

There’s a difference between revealing your goal and your strategy to achieve the goal. When the president starts announcing troop movements, bombing missions, withdrawal timetables, etc, let us know.
