Renewing our earlier conversation regarding Rep. Tom McClintock, I note today's PowerLineBlog attributes the following to him:
"Bring Back the Filibuster!"
I touted him for leadership, specifically as House Speaker (as a California Republican, he'll never be a Senator). I'd only suggest this as a demonstration of his tactical thinking and attempt to influence.

What an excellent article! I’m impressed with McClintock’s thinking on this issue. The ‘Gentleman’s Filibuster,’ has always irked me.
However, the nuclear option was used very effectively by the Dems to pack the courts with Leftists. If we reinstituted the old fashioned filibuster now, wouldn’t it mean the Dems could block pretty much all of Trump’s judicial nominees?

The point is that Senators (Jimmy Stewart notwithstanding) typically found the political cost of such malevolent and counterproductive grandstanding so outweighed any benefit that they seldom employed it--and McClintock is suggesting that same calculus will recur. He wants to call their bluff, which is usually a smart tactic when confronted by a bully.

I get that part. I just don’t understand, when the real filibuster ends, how Trump’s nominees get to 60. If all the Republicans vote for them, they’d still be 9 votes short.

I’m stumped, too. Let me know once you’ve figured it out!
