The difference between then and now, as can be seen from the reactions then vs now, is the target of the surveillance.
The NYT article doesn’t mention that a server in Trump Tower was a target of the investigation.
Everybody knows the overseas communications are monitored, so citing a wiretap in a story about possible crimes w/foreign banks doesn’t raise any eyebrows, as far as wiretapping goes.
The excitement now is that it was a Trump server, where they first went to normal court, and only went to FISA upon failure, since the standard there was lower.
A grander and wider scope corruption than the earlier story.
This says that these agency are involved.

Good point ...Soros, the Saudis, and MB all have a stake in making this about Russia ... I think it all stems from the Syria debacle

Im confused....how do we know which one is a lie? that Jan 19th could be fake, or true and the latest true, or fake? This is why I avoid the msm.
Remember:
Obama wiretapped the parents of Fox News’s James Rosen — with no legal authority that I know of.
He illegally used the IRS to punish political opponents.
He illegally used an executive order to give amnesty to “Dreamers” — a power even he admitted he didn’t have.
He and Eric Holder intervened ion the ongoing case against the New Black panthers to end the prosecution — after the Bush Administration had essentially gotten them convicted.
So why wouldn’t hve wiretap Trump, with or without a warrant?
Precisely the question.
Precisely what the MSM doesn’t want us to ask.
That’s why we should ask it.

Thank you for posting. According to others, this is already being scrubbed from the interwebs. Apparently the Jan 19, 2017 story is down the memory hole.
Stories contradicting this did not refer to the previous story or give a retraction.
Being a liberal means you never have to say “I’m sorry and I was wrong.”
During the evening hours of January 8'th, the hotel's billing system ran the day's credit card charges through... in the process it communicated with the issuing banks of each credit card to process payments.
On January 10'th, an NSA analyst saw the communication between the Trump hotel's computer and the Moscow bank that issued the credit card to the Russian businessman who had been traveling in Panama.
On January 11'th... White House staff review the report and say "Aha!!!! We got him! Trump organization computers talk to Russian banks!. Alert the media!"
Probably just like that
