Kansas lawmakers fail to override veto of income tax hikes

Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback on Wednesday vetoed a bill that would undo his signature income tax cut and his allies prevented the Legislature from overriding him, setting up future confrontations over balancing the state budget.

Less than two hours after Brownback vetoed the bill, the state House voted 85-40 to override him, giving supporters one vote more than the two-thirds majority they needed. But the vote in the Senate hours later was 24-16, which was three shy of a two-thirds majority.

By not overriding the veto, lawmakers will have to draft another plan aimed at closing projected budget shortfalls totaling nearly $1.1 billion through June 2019. …

I wish those lawmakers in Topeka would spend more time trying to root out graft and waste in state government rather than stick it to the taxpayers. I’m glad the override failed. Thank you Sam Brownback!

They can’t resist the “fail to override” fakenews. It’s not the people who want their taxes to go up.

I am glad that you are in Kansas. Is Brownback as bad as the media says? I mean the way they talk is that you guys are about bankrupt and a Democrat will win the next Governor election. I know it is the media but dang.

Brownback ran on a platform of reducing taxes and improving the business environment.

When asked what would happen if lower taxes meant the state collected less money, his answer was simple: we would spend less money. Pretty much a no brainer - we cannot continue to assume that the people are an infinite source of funding, especially when we have the option of leaving the state.

Here’s where it went south: Around 15 years ago, the state education system used our tax dollars to do ‘studies’ and hire ‘consultants’ who determined that students in Kansas are not getting an adequate education, as mandated in our state constitution. The solution - more money of course.

Neat trick - they don’t have enough money...with the exception that they do have enough money to hire lobbyists, consultants, etc to tell us they don’t have enough money.

Anyway, ever since, whenever its penny pinching time, and the legislature passes a budget that doesn’t throw dump trucks of cash at the schools, it goes to court...and the court always rules in favor of spending more money.

So, contrary to what I learned in 8th grade civics, our representatives don’t set our budget - the courts do.

Thus, it is practically impossible to reduce the size of government in Kansas.

Something tells me Pence is too nice a guy. Should the next one be Brownback or the Kansas SOS?

Now if they could just reduce the cost of registering vehicles in Kansas, so that 20 % of Kansas residents didn’t feel obligated to register in any other state in the country besides Kansas.

Kansas has a budget problem?

How much of that budget problem is due to illegals in the state-—working & taking away jobs from Kansas citizens & paying them welfare, etc???

Get busy, people & drop a dime on all those illegals you see & on the employers you KNOW are hiring them & often paying cash under the table.

Don’t think there are illegals in Kansas——go to the dearest Western Union outlet on Fri-Sat-Sun & watch them sending money transmittals into Mexico.

The media hates Brownback because he is a true conservative. There have been a few budget problems, and the media has been pounding on them nearly every day for years, exaggerating to the max.

The result was a loss of many conservative seats in the State House last November, setting the stage for a tax increase this year.

Brownback is a good guy, but he reminds me a bit of GWB in that he doesn't do much to defend himself or his supporters.

Kansas City schools being a prime example. It was unGodly what they did there.

I don’t think Pence is going anywhere...but I think Kobach needs a spot in tge administration - a big advocate of stopping voter fraud and a man of action.

You summed that up very well what is happening here in Kansas. Our medias are just terrible when it comes to politics. I've been banned from some of the media's comment sections trying to counter their leftist narratives (no bad words or name calling).

They also have their trolls try to drive people off the comment sections. Like I said, they are very terrible. The corrupt Kansas media is why we got Sebelius twice as governor and they are working to get another leftist governor in office. I just hope the word gets out so more and more Kansans treat the Kansas medias like CNN, understanding they all about fake news.
