Fearing a loss of millions of dollars for defying immigration authorities, Miami-Dade Mayor Carlos Gimenez on Thursday ordered county jails to comply with federal immigration detention requests — effectively gutting the county’s position as a “sanctuary” for immigrants in the country illegally.
Gimenez cited an executive order signed Wednesday by President Donald Trump that threatened to cut federal grants for any counties or cities that don’t cooperate fully with Immigration and Customs Enforcement. Since 2013, Miami-Dade has refused to indefinitely detain inmates who are in the country illegally and wanted by ICE — not based on principle, but because the federal government doesn’t fully reimburse the county for the expense.

Read the article closely - it’s a different situation in Miami-Dade, since none of the Cuban population is illegal and the Mexican/Central American population is relatively lower.
I can certainly understand their complaint about not being able to afford to keep the illegals in jail - and under Obama, that was very likely part of their strategy.
Under Trump, the deportation hearings will happen in a timely manner and there won’t be as many housed in local jails.
Maybe. I would rather reinforce good behavior by the threat of what will happen if they don't obey the law. I don't trust the Feds even under Trump to stymie their inclination for corruption & graft, when you give them an inch. It's better to keep their feet to the fire as well.

The Mayor of Miami doesn’t have a governor on his side unlike sanctuary cities in liberal states like CA and NY.

But he is but the first of many dominoes to come. And when they start rolling over we must rub it in, with them and all liberals, family or not.
One sanctuary-city mayor wises up. I fear the others will be harder to persuade, but I have faith in President Trump getting the job done.
