Both of my husband’s sisters say the same thing as your brother. They don’t even realize that they are not doing their own thinking, but depending on the “in” crowd to offer up liberal sanctioned opinions. That crowd approval makes them feel safe. They are invincibly ignorant.
For some, politics is a fashion statement which inherently means that ego plays a big part. That makes them double down on their wrongheadedness rather than face the fact that what they believe doesn’t make sense. They will do all kinds of mental gymnastics and call it logic to save face. For them, the idea of examining their beliefs is moot because they won’t change them anyway and would rather not know.
Good for you. You are doing the right thing. I have a cousin in the exact same position and he has fun tweaking his gasping, blubbering siblings and their kids. Hey, they need to hear the truth from somewhere. He is the voice of reason which they do their best to out debate.
