If Trump Tweets It, Is It News? A Quandary for the News Media
The New York Times ^ | November 29, 2016 | Michael M. GRYNBAUM & Sydney EMBER

Since Election Day, President-elect Donald J. Trump has proposed a U-turn in American diplomatic relations with Cuba, boasted about negotiations with a major manufacturer, trumpeted false claims about millions of illegal votes and hinted that he might upend current free speech laws by banning flag burning.

As news organizations grapple with covering a commander in chief unlike any other, Mr. Trump’s Twitter account — a bully pulpit, propaganda weapon and attention magnet all rolled into one — has quickly emerged as a fresh journalistic challenge and a source of lively debate.

How to cover a president’s pronouncements when they are both provocative and maddeningly vague? Does an early-morning tweet amount to a planned shift in American policy? Should news outlets, as some readers argue, ignore clearly untrue tweets, rather than amplify falsehoods further?

It's a quandary, I tell ya! QUANDARY- that was the favorite word of the left to criticize GWB on the war in Iraq.

As of November 28, 2016, Twitter Accounts, can someone please update to where this has grow as of today, please.

@POTUS has 12.3 million followers

@realDonaldTrump has 16.3 million followers

I agree with Kaplan's Tweet, he clearly understands Trump and he fears him, poor fellow.

It's too bad for the media. Sucks to be them, they have lost their power! Their false biased concocted headlines have had the same effect on generations of Americans. The only thing that differs is that he reaches people instantly and they had to wait for people to buy their papers and read their leftist propaganda. Most people do not bother to read past the headline and the media has effectively manipulated public opinion to the detriment of us all. Now the power to do the same is in President Trump's hands, or fingers- literally.

— Fred Kaplan (@fmkaplan) Nov. 27, 2016 Part of the concern is that Mr. Trump’s Twitter posts can have a ripple effect in the media ecosystem. Producers of morning shows and newspaper assignment editors wake up to head-turning statements from the future leader of the free world; those remarks sometimes dominate coverage for hours. Even if journalists insert caveats or clearly label a statement as false, the remarks still reach a large audience.

a bully pulpit, propaganda weapon and attention magnet all rolled into one......look up that definition in the dictionary and the answer would be NTY's.

Ha haaaa!!!

After a hundred years of being in business, the NY Slimes STILL doesn't know what "news" is.

Their problem isn't in figuring what's news and what isn't news. Their problem is how do they keep losing control of what they put out that's supposed to harm Trump.

“...or clearly label a statement as false, the remarks still reach a large audience.”

“FALSE” by whose standards.

The left has for years blurred the line between true and false until all is grey.

So just because a journalist does not believe something is no longer enough to make a statement “false”.

If they believe something is false, prove the TWEET is false not some straw man that you created is false.

I think they should start cleaning up their own house before going after Trump - who fact checks journalist, or editorials, or letters to the editor?

If they don’t report it, it’s Fake News by omission.

While FreeRepublic and Huffington post can publish or refuse to publish what they wish, the First Amendment being their protector, COX or ATT or Verizon cannot refuse to allow conference calls among members of Democrats or Republicans based upon their political bent. The same should now apply to Twitter and Facebook.

Facebook and Twitter have grown beyond mere social media status. They are now de facto public utilities and as such should not be allowed to censor political speech.

Indeed. The Collectivists deny the existence of Objective Reality.

What they are really saying is that the NY Slime is the only entity allowed to judge what is “news.” More than ever, it is “all the news that fits.”

Clearly, they are fearful and are trolling for ways to maintain control over the release of news and to manipulate the perception of reality. They are accustomed to controlling most brains and telling sheople what to think. It’s a “fresh journalistic challenge and a source of lively debate.” Yes. because they’ve had a stranglehold on the news.

I bet they are begging Twitter to shut Donald Trump down. He is a threat to their agenda and their very existence.

Trump needs to suggest that one of his tech-savy business friends develops and introduces a communications platform to Twitter and Facebook that is superior without the curtailment of free speech.

You don’t have to sign up to Twitter and “follow” to see Trumps messages.

Millions just look at the link to his page to bypass the degenerate enemedia scumbags:

It’s amazing how they absolutely cannot see the elephant in the room. But, I love it, because all they are doing is hastening their own demise and irrelevance.

I disagree.

They are performing a function that the postal service should also fill.
They should be allowed lattitude just as UPS and FedEx are, but there needs to be a government postal application filling these functions as well.

I love it. Of COURSE it is a quandary for them! They want ALL news to be filtered and disseminated by them, not anyone else including Trump.

I love it. They have no idea, and Trump seems not to give a damn if he should or shouldn’t tweet.
