Hundreds of students and faculty at the University of Virginia have asked the schools president to stop quoting President Thomas Jefferson, the universitys founder, because of his slave-owning past.
The letter garnered 469 signatures before being sent to University President Teresa Sullivan on Friday, The Cavalier Daily reported. It was prompted by an email sent last week by Ms. Sullivan promoting unity in light of Donald Trumps presidential victory.
Thomas Jefferson wrote to a friend that University of Virginia students are not of ordinary significance only: they are exactly the persons who are to succeed to the government of our country, and to rule its future enmities, its friendships and fortunes, Ms. Sullivan wrote in the email. I encourage todays U.Va. students to embrace that responsibility.
Professors argued that Ms. Sullivan should refrain from quoting the late president due to his owning of slaves and other racist beliefs, The Cavalier Daily reported.
We would like for our administration to understand that although some members of this community may have come to this university because of Thomas Jeffersons legacy, others of us came here in spite of it, the letter read. For many of us, the inclusion of Jefferson quotations in these emails undermines the message of unity, equality and civility that you are attempting to convey.

When is someone going to challenge these collectivists on their logic?
Wow. He used to ne a big fave with Democraps. Same with Lincoln. Guess it’s full “Koba”, now.
Just laugh at them.
Then why dont the professors go all the way with the Jefferson slavery issue and close the university?
How about quoting Karl Marx.
Yep, and then tell them to FOAD.
Guess it is the end of the Donks’ Jefferson-Jackson Day Dinners.
If you did the genealogy of these students and professors and found any ancestors who came to this country over 150 years ago, there is a good chance there would be a fair share of slave holders on quite a few of the branches of the trees.
Certainly, any history professor would know this and should know better than to participate in this issue.
It is time for everyone to grow up.
It leaves you speechless, doesn’t it? :-D
I mean, what more needs to be said? :-)
I think the students should burn their own school down. That will show em.... Not that they ever paid any tuition....as I suspect these students are the freeloader types on minority status scholarship crap...
The communists never stop
“U.Va. professors ask (their University’s) president to stop quoting Thomas Jefferson”
I’m sorry, that’s a completely insufficient response to expiate the shame of their university’s founder’s slave-owning.
Really, the ONLY decent thing to do is to raze the entire university to the ground, salt its earth, and fence it off forever. However, the name itself, “University of Virginia”, can never be purified by razing and salting, and therefore the only option is to forbid Virginia in perpetuity from every naming any university or college “University of Virginia”.
Wait a minute! Did Congress pass a law granting the University of Virginia copyright rights on everything Jefferson said or wrote? Who the hell are they to tell any American not to quote Jefferson?
University of Virginia, STFU!
Hopefully the president writes back: grow up.
Didn’t MiLK used to beat the #### out of hookers?
Every last one of the Demos that show up for the J&J Day dinners ought to be labeled as racist ethnic-cleansers for supporting the dinner with such names attached to it. Of course, they could say they are now recognizing George Jefferson and Jesse Jackson at the dinners and all would be forgiven by the snowflake crowd.
