The branch manager for the Houston office of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services seemed clear about the reason and timing for asking staff to work overtime to push through more citizenship applications.
“The field office due to the election year needs to process as many of their N-400 cases as possible between now and FY 2016,” the manager said in an email to staff dated July 21, 2016, and referring to applications for citizenship called N-400 forms.
The email message from the Citizenship and Immigration Services supervisor offered overtime, including weekends, as an incentive to process more applications:
If you have cases in this category or other pending, you are encouraged to take advantage of the OT if you can. This will be an opportunity to move your pending naturalization cases. If you have not volunteered for OT, please consider and let me know if you are interested.

I have asked several times on FR what the current requirements are to become a naturalized citizen and never received an answer. I do know that in years gone by there was a waiting period from permanent resident to application of something like 5 years and then they had to take courses and pass a test (in English) which had questions on civics and history plus more. What is today’s requirement??

thanks - it seems much like it was years ago when my company asked me to help some long time resident alien Cuban engineers gain citizenship. This was in the early 70’s.
I drove a neighbor’s babysitter, who was born in Africa, to her ceremony where she became an official American citizen. She was handed a voter registration card along with the rest of her paperwork. They showed a video of President Obama, who said they didn’t have to leave their culture behind. It didn’t happen, but if there had been no one with her, it would have been pretty easy for someone at the ceremony to sign her up for the Democrats. Instead, she got a civics lesson from me in the car on the way home, and all the reasons why she should vote Republican.
Much has changed since then, including the agency’s name.
