Navy may discipline sailor for pulling a Kaepernick
Washington Examiner ^ | 9/8/16 | Anna Giaritelli

A sailor who refused to stand for morning colors may now face administrative action, Military.com reported late Wednesday.

Naval Education and Training Command spokeswoman Lt. Cmdr. Kate Meadows did not detail the specific actions the Navy is taking against the young, African-American sailor.

The young woman is training at the Naval Air Technical Training Center in Pensacola, Fla., and is expected to continue training with her class.

She sailor posted an eight-minute video to Facebook late last month explaining why she was following in the footsteps of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick by not standing during the national anthem. The woman cited the now-defunct third stanza of the song and instead of stopping in place and standing during the morning command, she took a seat and raised her fist in the air, a symbol of the Black Power movement.

Stay abreast of the latest developments from nation's capital and beyond with curated News Alerts from the Washington Examiner news desk and delivered to your inbox.

"[The stanza] basically says land of the free, home of the brave, except for hirelings and slaves and I just can't support anything like that," the sailor said. "I think Colin had a really good point when he said we had bodies in the streets."

The sailor said she will not stand for the anthem "until this country shows they've got my back as a black woman."

This has been big news here at work the past two days. While the video was posted some time ago, it took until yesterday before it really got out there after several military-themed Facebook pages found it and reposted it. Our CO has said that anyone under his command who pulls a stunt like this will be up in his office in short order where chevrons will be lost.

I'm betting, however, that the Navy buckles and this POS "sailor" receives a slap on the wrist. It pains me to think this.

Perhaps she should visit one the the 3rd world Islamic shitholes in the Middle East for a while, she’ll learn VERY quickly that this country has her back and those of other black women.

Don’t NAVY recruits have to take a pledge of loyalty to America to be enlisted?

may?

The Navy has changed drastically then. Back in the day this would have been dealt with severely and swiftly.

She needs to leave. The country. A lot of people do.

Your assessment is probably and unfortunately correct....

Many people don’t understand that the military functions under different laws and rights than ordinary civilian life. This often bites lower ranking soldiers/sailors/marines/airmen in the backside when they pull a stunt like this. When you’re in uniform, you are *required* by military regulation to stand, face the colors, and salute when outside. You don’t have a right to free speech when in uniform, as well as a great many other restrictions. Hopefully, the Captain’s Mast will provide this sailor with some perspective on the limits she must live under, and the XO can pull her aside later and correct her misinformed status.

Kick her out of the US Navy.
Her loyalty is under question...

Exactly right. The ignorance and arrogance of some resentful people in this country is breathtaking. They have no idea how lucky they are to live here.

Sadly, its unlikely they will ever admit this.

Well, there are more severe levels of military justice than just administrative action, so I guess “may” is technically correct. I’d feel better if the wording was “...faces administrative action at a minimum...”

That was the first thing that came to my mind too.

“’The Star-Spangled Banner’ and Slavery
Is the legacy of black slavery enshrined in a lesser-known stanza of the U.S. national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner”? Some historians say yes.”

Oops. The Sailor forgot they don’t have the same rights as Americans when they join the military. Perhaps after being punished, the Sailor may realize that.

I notice her name is omitted from the article, written by a one Anna Giaritelli. Was it the Navy or Anna who fails to disclose this information.

I suggest this ‘sailor’ spend some time in a location where Sharia rules. Then, if she makes it back, tell us again what you don’t like about the national anthem.

As an Army brat growing up, when the cannon went off at 1800hrs, you stopped, got out of your car, and faced the main post flagpole as retreat played over a big PA system and the flag was lowered. There was no question. This was as a civilian dependent.

This woman needs some fast serious disciplinary action.
