Byron York: Asking for black votes, a very different Donald Trump

How many times have Donald Trump's supporters and critics debated whether he will pivot to a larger, more presidential candidacy? Too many to count. So put aside any talk of pivoting — the fact is, Trump delivered a focused, powerful, and disciplined speech Tuesday night in West Bend, Wisconsin, about 45 minutes north of Milwaukee. Trump focused largely on problems that disproportionately afflict black Americans, arguing that his proposals on crime, immigration, trade, jobs, education, and other issues will improve African-American lives more than Hillary Clinton's.

Trump began by declaring, "We're at a decisive moment in this election," which few would deny, given Trump's perilous position in the polls. Last week he laid out a jobs plan, Trump said, and on Monday he outlined a plan to defeat radical Islamic terrorism. Now, he came to discuss "how to make our communities safe again."

Calling the recent riots in Milwaukee "an assault on the right of all citizens to live in security and live in peace," Trump won applause with the declaration that "Law and order must be restored."

"The main victims of these riots are law-abiding African-American citizens living in these neighborhoods," Trump continued. "It's their jobs, it's their homes, it's their schools and communities which will suffer the most as a result. There's no compassion in tolerating lawless conduct for anyone."

Trump charged that Clinton and the Obama administration have pushed a "totally false" narrative of widespread police abuse across the United States. "The problem in our poorest communities is not that there are too many police," Trump argued. "The problem is that there are not enough police."

"Those peddling the narrative of cops as a racist force in our society — a narrative supported with a nod by my opponent — share directly in the responsibility...

Why people think that somehow is magically going to change really baffles me... it is what it is.

LBJ would tell you that the Democrats have 150 years of black support left.

Actually, Trump was merely challenging blacks reconsider their usual Plantation Vote (D) both intellectually and logically.

Absentee fathers, schools that don't teach anything but victimhood, and dodging of bullets just to leave their home is where voting (D) has gotten them. AND that'll only get worse.

There *is* a difference between Trump's challenge of blacks' voting rationale and "asking" for their vote.

Trump needs to run the Margaret Sanger quote about Black people and Hillary’s praise of her as an ad

Great suggestion.

Would love to see CNN and MSNBC commentators squirm over that.

Byron has not been paying attention. Trump has been after the black vote from the beginning.

One of the biggest problems in the lower income black community is lack of respect and to authority and self-discipline. You see it in their behavior in failing schools where teachers/administrators are not able to properly discipline unruly students...

Right you are. And your point about a surge is well-taken. My concern is that once a level of force is raised up and set, sometimes it is hard to back it down when the initial problem is corrected. But I think we agree that something positive has to be done, and Trump at least is showing some leadership unlike HC or BHO.

Surging an area doesn’t necessarily mean ramping up force, but merely increasing the presence not allowing the criminal element to have refuge.

I really don’t know....you would probably have to have some open discussions with Jewish people. But since they own Hollywood and the arts, I would say their values are very far from average Americans.

If you google “why are Jews so rude”....you get over 9m hits. Perhaps its because so many are very wealthy. Wealthy people of any nationality are very dismissive of lower classes and the life challenges they face.

Perhaps they have a deep hatred of Christians due to their history since being scattered all over the world in the 1st century.

Milwaukee police officer who shot Sylville Smith identified, threats follow
posted at 9:01 pm on August 17, 2016 by John Sexton

The identity of the police officer who shot and killed Sylville Smith appeared on social media and was confirmed today by the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel. Photos of the officer on social media with his name (and some with his address) prompted responses encouraging violence against him:

As of Tuesday, at least 3,000 people have shared a Facebook photo of the 24-year-old Milwaukee patrolman who fatally shot 23-year-old Sylville Smith – some of them adding furious and threatening comments.

“Now y’all see his face if he’s seen anywhere in the city drop him,” read one post. Another called for a gun so the person could “shoot him right in his head.”

The posters gave the officer’s name, Dominique Heaggan, and some included his home address. The Journal Sentinel has independently confirmed his identity, which has not been released by the Police Department. He is also known as Dominique Heaggan-Brown.

The NY Daily News published some examples of other responses condoning violence against Heaggan-Brown online:

“Do whatever ya’ll need to do to this man,” wrote one person.

Another wrote: “They coming for yo a–, Mr. Postman.”
