Gingrich, Christie are the leading candidates to be Trump’s running mate
The Washington Post ^ | June 30, 2016 | Robert Costa and Karen Tumulty

Posted on 06/30/2016 5:49:53 PM PDT by monkapotamus

Donald Trump’s campaign has begun formally vetting possible running mates, with former House speaker Newt Gingrich emerging as the leading candidate, followed by New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie. But there are more than a half-dozen others being discussed as possibilities, according to several people with knowledge of the process.

Given Trump’s unpredictability, campaign associates caution that the presumptive Republican nominee could still shake up his shortlist. But with little more than two weeks before the start of the Republican National Convention, Gingrich and Christie have been asked to submit documents and are being cast as favorites for the post inside the campaign. Gingrich in particular is the beneficiary of a drumbeat of support from Trump confidants such as Ben Carson...

This is like consulting Al Capone to see who Pope Pius XI is going to install as Archbishop of Chicago

Yeah, I know. We have to win Fl or Oh..... but Rubio and Kasich sicken me.

Isn’t there a conservative from those states that would work?

If he chooses Christie he risks losing law enforcement support. Cops and teachers in NJ despise Christie

Just curious, do you know why?

Because he threatens their 100K a year pension for life with full medical benefits, for life

That is why. The public unions hate him, I like that

“Romney supposedly vetted Christie and concluded he was a nightmare. Which is why Trump might take a chance on him.

It’s a bit of a long shot, but Christie might be able to bring along NJ.”

Christie was in Romney’s final five. He was the one Romney wanted, ... but. They couldn’t vet him. There were scandals involving him and his family that the Romney people wanted answers to. They never got them after asking many times. Eventually they ran out of time and crossed him off the list.

NO Christie. NO Gingrich.

Christie may be alright in the DOJ somewhere.

Gingrich could be an advisor of sorts I guess.

Neither one should be considered for VP.

Newt knows how to navigate through the Washington Cartel. Washington has become Mob like. Newt communication skills are legendary. He makes it seem so simple. Yet he is one of the only current or former politicians who can speak to everyday Americans just like Trump does, but Newt's Trump card is he knows Washington. Newt is Cheney 2.0 with a smile and the intellect of a professor. Newt continues to be very likable and would help Trump beyond measure.

Newt has gravitas, wisdom, wit and experience. Newt balanced our budget. Newt can help Trump deliver the first 100 days on a level that we haven't seen in modern history. THAT is why the left is afraid of Newt as VP. Trump supporters should know if Trump selects Newt, it will be game OVER as it relates to winning and going back to what our Founding Fathers envisioned for you nation.

Plus I think Gingrich is too volatile. I like listening to him, as a rule, but then he goes and says something really stupid, just to surprise people.

Remember this is a Donald Trump ticket. :-) At times one could say those same things about Trump too. Let Trump be Trump. Let Newt be Newt. We shall see what happens. Should be entertaining.

Still hoping it's Newt. Sessions is amazing, but Newt is on another level. Newt has been there…He knows how to take down the enemy with a smile. That is why the left is so afraid Newt will be named as VP.

Newt is an intellectual powerhouse who is down to earth and people love him.

It has to be Newt.

"according to several people with knowledge of the process."

Right, and there is absolutely no possibility that Trump insiders might share his contempt for the press and toy with them?

(I like the WaPo "We narrowed Trump’s vice-presidential possibilities to 35. Now you pick one." graphic. Two I like much better than Christie but don't see on the graphic are Jim Webb and Allen West.)

This is coming from the same Washington Post that said Trump would never get the nomination.

Why do Freepers give these clowns any credibility???

I can rest assured conservatives that Trump will not pick a Globalist VP like Gingrich or Christie.

It’s most likely going to be Senator Jeff Sessions.

Trump is the disrupter that we need in Washington. With that said, Trump will need to hire those that know how to navigate the Washington Cartel. Period.

Not many people can be trusted with carrying out Trump’s “Make America Great Again” vision with enough experience to make it happen.

That is why, Newt is the most reasoned, common sense choice. Newt will provide Trump such great counsel and provide wisdom and experience. The left will screech, LOLOLOL. Looking forward to them screeching because they know that Newt Gingrich will own them if when they try to hijack and interview, as they pretend to pose as a neutral reporter. LOL The following is a interview Newt did with MSNBC where Newt saw the trap and turned it around. He was defending Sarah Palin. And as always, Newt finishes it with a smile.

Agreed on Sessions. Gravitas out the wazoo. And stays on message and hasn’t screwed anything up.

What Newt is recommending and promoting with Kennedy appears to be a pretty reasoned platform and subject matter. Sometimes it is about getting things done. What we know is Newt gets things done for the American people. Trump is big on competence and getting things done. Still hoping it is Newt.

Would be nice to see Newt sitting above the President again for a State of the Union address. Only this time as VP.
