I am not sure Britain ever completely recovered from WWII.

At one time they could have lines of battleships plus cruisers, battle cruisers, carriers, etc.

Now they only have a handful of small ships.

Britain never recovered from World War One. They lost their best and brightest, and the gene pool was never the same.
