A Liberal Magazine Just Spilled the Beans about K-12 Education
American Thinker ^ | April 20, 2016 | Bruce Deitrick Price

Posted on 04/20/2016 8:31:32 AM PDT by Kaslin

This upscale progressive magazine ran a super-long, super-detailed article titled "The Math Revolution." It basically wanted to proclaim the happy news that extraordinary things are taking place in American education.

The Atlantic fell all over itself with enthusiasm. You would reasonably suppose that some fresh winds were blowing, and students in America would actually know how to add and subtract with competence, and maybe even multiply and divide efficiently.

What else does the word "revolution" suggest but wonderful sweeping change? At last, at long last, our public schools will redeem themselves and began to turn out little math experts.

Then the writer gave it away: "The students are being produced by a new pedagogical ecosystem – almost entirely extracurricular – that has developed online and in the country's rich coastal cities and tech meccas."

Ooh.

Please savor the words "almost entirely extracurricular." In other words, these superior, successful math students are not in essence attending American public schools. They are going outside of American public schools, to something separate, uncontaminated, and therefore superior.

#3 son (14) is taking precalculus and linear algebra using Khan Academy. He can hardly be persuaded to eat his meals because he’s so involved with multivariant functions.

Recently heard about someone taking the Army ASVAB fresh out of high school. The results are on a 1-99 scale with 99 being the best. That person got a 3 with ninth grade algebra. Oh, my...

I heard common core math discussed on radio a couple of months ago and a “test” question was posed “8 + 4 = 12, ‘does that seem fair’?”

The host and guest never addressed it but that phrasing made me consider the convoluted factoring that is done in Commie Core re-distributive math. Take some numbers from here, add them to that smaller number so that it is “fair” to sum them up.

I know about borrowing a number and carrying 1s from basic math but never did the idea of “fairness” come up.

Reminds me of the old joke:

A redneck asked his son what he learned in school today.
The son replied proudly, “Pi R Squared!”
The redneck retorted, “Those schools ain’t worth a damn! Everybody knows “Pie Are Round! Cornbread are square!”.........................

Mess up your bank ledger and overdraw your account.

Those folks will be happy to tell you what's "fair".

Khan Academy is super. I’ve been taking the math classes to refresh myself for fun and it is very enjoyable. Pure math, no nonsense.

There’s an argument to be made that school should be Khan Academy type lectures as homework, with school being “homework” work sessions with help available for tough parts that kids don’t get from the recorded lectures.

Common Core Blockbuster: Mathematician Dr. Jim Milgram Warns Common Core Will Destroy America’s Standing in Technology

http://www.breitbart.com/Big-Government/2014/09/01/Common-Core-Blockbuster-Mathematician-Dr-Jim-Milgram-Warns-Common-Core-Will-Destroy-America-s-Standing-in-Technology

In less than 40 minutes, Milgram floored listeners with information about the Common Core standards, how they will affect the nation’s students and, ultimately, the country itself, and what parents and citizens can do to try to stop them. Listen to the podcast in full below:

Snip

“That’s what they [sic] know,” he said. “If we’re lucky, we [sic] know Algebra II. With Algebra II as background, only one in 50 people will ever get a college degree in STEM.”

Milgram warned that with the Common Core standards, unless U.S. students are able to afford exclusive private high school educations that are more challenging, they will be disadvantaged.

Snip

“The only way you’re going to get rid of it is state by state and parent group by parent group. And if you’re lucky, industry will join you because high tech is ever a more important part of our economy.”

The bad news, according to Milgram, is that, returning to his experience in California in the ‘90s, if students had been in that system with the older, poor standards for three or four years, “the damage couldn’t be undone,” he said.

Another excellent article:

Common Core is Menticide - Common Core Math Precludes Brain Development

http://freedomoutpost.com/common-core-is-menticide-common-core-math-precludes-brain-development/

The Labor Department developed the SCANS (Secretary’s Commission On Achieving Necessary Skills), in April, 1992. The SCANS lists exactly what the student is supposed to master, know, be and do, including the personality traits. The SCANS is the force driving Common Core.

[ ]

All of the psychological methodologies used in the Common Core, SCANS classroom are front-loaded and students are manipulated to achieve the specific, pre-determined outcomes. Every child has to “get in the box” and stay there.

This curriculum, testing and treating and the process to achieve results is exactly what Dr. Sloan warned me about 35 years ago. Forget about the “disinterested” pursuit of the truth. Forget personal achievement. Forget exploring and developing individual talents. The pre-determined outcomes are group-oriented, leading to group thought and goals.

[ ]

By complicating simple math facts to the point that memorization is impossible, Common Core Math eliminates the opportunity for the Common Core child’s brain to develop normally. No scaffolding to higher math. Since simple math problems are what stimulated these areas of the brain, without traditional basic math, the brain centers of memory are not given the chance to progress. And memory lags.

To destroy the functions of the mind is menticide, the killing of the mind. That’s why I stand by my conclusion that Common Core produces cookie-cutter, SCANS creatures – namely, ant drones. Sen. Alexander and Rep. Kline are trying to transform schools into formicaries by passing ESEA Reauthorization, which will codify Common Core curriculum, assessment, psych-coding, reporting and psych-treatment (Response to Intervention) for every student.

[ ]

Note: Only students with the specified, collectivist attitudes, values, beliefs and dispositions will be selected for that “small cadre of highly educated creative people.” That independent thinker, Einstein, would not be selected. On the other hand, Hitler’s right-hand henchman, Himmler, the non-productive chicken farmer, would be selected.

In conclusion, social engineers of every discipline are trying to transform our society in to a collectivist society by restructuring the schools and producing a docile, compliant worker for industry.

The ASVAB tests to the 10th grade level on all subjects.

A score of "3" means the person scored in the lowest 3% of their peer group (gender and age) tested that day or cycle.

I graduated from a pretty prestigious engineering school just 20 years ago. I help an 11 y.o. with his math from time to time and I have to google the terms he’s using.

I honestly think it’s an effort to further destroy the family and send the message to the kids “...your parents are stupid” and “the government will take care of you.”
