This upscale progressive magazine ran a super-long, super-detailed article titled "The Math Revolution." It basically wanted to proclaim the happy news that extraordinary things are taking place in American education.
The Atlantic fell all over itself with enthusiasm. You would reasonably suppose that some fresh winds were blowing, and students in America would actually know how to add and subtract with competence, and maybe even multiply and divide efficiently.
What else does the word "revolution" suggest but wonderful sweeping change? At last, at long last, our public schools will redeem themselves and began to turn out little math experts.
Then the writer gave it away: "The students are being produced by a new pedagogical ecosystem – almost entirely extracurricular – that has developed online and in the country's rich coastal cities and tech meccas."
Ooh.
Please savor the words "almost entirely extracurricular." In other words, these superior, successful math students are not in essence attending American public schools. They are going outside of American public schools, to something separate, uncontaminated, and therefore superior.

#3 son (14) is taking precalculus and linear algebra using Khan Academy. He can hardly be persuaded to eat his meals because he’s so involved with multivariant functions.
Recently heard about someone taking the Army ASVAB fresh out of high school. The results are on a 1-99 scale with 99 being the best. That person got a 3 with ninth grade algebra. Oh, my...
I heard common core math discussed on radio a couple of months ago and a “test” question was posed “8 + 4 = 12, ‘does that seem fair’?”
The host and guest never addressed it but that phrasing made me consider the convoluted factoring that is done in Commie Core re-distributive math. Take some numbers from here, add them to that smaller number so that it is “fair” to sum them up.
I know about borrowing a number and carrying 1s from basic math but never did the idea of “fairness” come up.
Reminds me of the old joke:
A redneck asked his son what he learned in school today.
The son replied proudly, “Pi R Squared!”
The redneck retorted, “Those schools ain’t worth a damn! Everybody knows “Pie Are Round! Cornbread are square!”.........................
Those folks will be happy to tell you what's "fair".
Khan Academy is super. I’ve been taking the math classes to refresh myself for fun and it is very enjoyable. Pure math, no nonsense.

There’s an argument to be made that school should be Khan Academy type lectures as homework, with school being “homework” work sessions with help available for tough parts that kids don’t get from the recorded lectures.

The bad news, according to Milgram, is that, returning to his experience in California in the ‘90s, if students had been in that system with the older, poor standards for three or four years, “the damage couldn’t be undone,” he said.
True, but you don’t learn which toilet to use there. It’s so confusing...

To destroy the functions of the mind is menticide, the killing of the mind. That’s why I stand by my conclusion that Common Core produces cookie-cutter, SCANS creatures – namely, ant drones. Sen. Alexander and Rep. Kline are trying to transform schools into formicaries by passing ESEA Reauthorization, which will codify Common Core curriculum, assessment, psych-coding, reporting and psych-treatment (Response to Intervention) for every student.

Note: Only students with the specified, collectivist attitudes, values, beliefs and dispositions will be selected for that “small cadre of highly educated creative people.” That independent thinker, Einstein, would not be selected. On the other hand, Hitler’s right-hand henchman, Himmler, the non-productive chicken farmer, would be selected.
In conclusion, social engineers of every discipline are trying to transform our society in to a collectivist society by restructuring the schools and producing a docile, compliant worker for industry.

I graduated from a pretty prestigious engineering school just 20 years ago. I help an 11 y.o. with his math from time to time and I have to google the terms he’s using.
I honestly think it’s an effort to further destroy the family and send the message to the kids “...your parents are stupid” and “the government will take care of you.”
