Assemblyman Butler Proposes Different NY SAFE Act for Upstate New York

One New York legislator is proposing some changes to the New York SAFE Act.Based on the fact that two separate minimum wage requirements were recently enacted by the legislature for residents of New York City and the central and upper parts of New York, Assemblyman Marc Butler is proposing that gun legislation be dealt with in the same manner.

Most of the arrests and convictions from the New York SAFE Act have come from New York City, Butler says, and he thinks that law enforcement officers in Upstate New York have responded differently to the NY SAFE Act than those downstate.

The Assemblyman says that – if New York can enact different minimum wage requirements for New York City, Long Island and Westchester, and Upstate New York – then it should be acceptable to enact different gun laws for those regions as well.

His ultimate goal, he says, is to eliminate the SAFE Act upstate altogether.

Sounds like a plan. Kind of doubtful it's going to work though.

I would suggest two separate states entirely. Albany and New York City are progressive hell holes, who unfortunately dominate State politics.

A separate state from Albany North and West would be much more like PA, Ohio or Indiana.

Good the safe act has more or less destroyed NRA service rifle competition in New York since its enactment.

bad legislation. allows police to own this stuff, not only when a police man, but after. Does not apply to NY state National guardsmen. Sets up two classes of citizenship.

Personally I would rather see the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment extended to the states. Let the liberals choke on it like we had to with GAY marriage.

More infringing. Trespassing on God-given and constitutionally recognized right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.

(Born and raised in Western New York State, in the Southern Tier.)

The government should give everyone $100K a year, free food and unlimited drugs.

Well, at least we're somewhat fortunate where I am in upstate because the surrounding sheriffs refuse to enforce many aspects of the (un)SafeAct.

As a Long Island resident, I’d raise holy hell, just like I raised holy hell with my turncoat of a (snort) “Republican” state senator who inexplicably voted for the SAFE Act.

(My Assemblyman voted against it.)

My rights are no different than those of the people upstate, no matter WHAT my idiotic senator says.

Regards,

PS: You would not believe the cock and bull story he gave me about why he voted as he did. It was a stunningly stupid excuse. God, I can’t wait to get the hell out of here...

The liberals love it when a plan comes toeghter.

Where I live, we are fighting tooth and nail to get just the second public shooting range built. On a completely separate island from the first one if you can believe that.

Massive push-back from liberals against anyone having a place "that promotes shooting guns" as some liberal bitch wrote in the local rag.

Visited Connecticut just before the election, in 2014, and drove to the Baseball Hall of Fame, in Cooperstown. Since I live out west, it was nearby, as far as I was concerned. I was heartened by all the anti Cuomo signs I saw, specifically referencing the SAFE Act. My pal had to remind me that there were more Gungrabber types in one square mile of NYC, than all of the signs we saw :(

Born in Johnson City, grew up in Endwell, served in Plattsburgh, lived in Rouses Point for umpteen years. Now down in Rockland County.

Give it your best shot Mr. Butler ! You have my best wishes !

We lived on Long Island, Elmont - Valley Stream when I was a kid in the late 50’s.

My older Brother took his Bolt Action .22 Rifle to School. He was in the Shooting Club. Nobody batted an eye.

I think my Parents bought the Rifle at Sears.

My son went to Chaminade. Graduated 2 years ago, and was on the riflery team. They are one of the very few that still have one.

In fact, the team sometimes competes remotely, with other schools from upstate. Each team shoots at their own school, and the judges record the official scores, with the teams never meeting in person. SAD.

Regards,

I’ve been to Rouses Point. I used to work at JFK Airport, and Trans-Border bought our company. That made me a Trans-Border employee, and I had to make a few business trips to the main office up there.

The first time I went, I flew into Plattsburgh, and then drove the new company car back down to NYC. I’d never driven through the real mountains before. STUNNING!

Regards,

Live in CA now. I remember driving around back in the 70’s with my two Rifles in the Gun Rack of my Ford 4x4 Pickup.

When the mood hit me, I would drive up Angeles Crest Highway and go target shooting with my Buddies.

Nobody gave a flying **** about people having Evil Guns.
It was a Free State back then.

I was active in the high school skeet and trap club in 1973. Enjoyed competing in both at the South Bay Rod and Gun club near Brown Field. Still have a trap trophy from that activity. I could buy a box of CCI Mini-mags at K-Mart and go rabbit hunting at 16. Sometimes I just took the .22 cal Benjamin pellet rifle out for rabbits. Either way, there way rabbit on the table and pelts collected.

I left CA in 2001 for Idaho. Recently, our rabbit population has increased. I've updated my rabbit rifle from the old Stevens bolt action that my dad used in Scouts. Haven't been inclined to take a mule deer yet, but they are very easy to find in my area.

Back in the 60s, Canisius College had a rifle range in the Student Union.
