Unbound Delegates Could Hold Key to Stopping Trump at Convention

The ultimate result of the 2016 presidential election could yet rest on the likes of Erling “Curly” Haugland, 69, a businessman from Bismarck, North Dakota, who will be one of the 2,472 delegates to the Republican party convention in July. And he isn’t saying what he’ll do.

“I wouldn’t know until the day of the first ballot [at the convention in Cleveland, Ohio] because a lot can happen between now and then,” he said.

With the Republican party in uproar over the runaway primary lead of billionaire property mogul Donald Trump, the role of convention delegates could be crucial in deciding who faces Hillary Clinton, the likely Democratic nominee.

Many Republican grandees believe Trump would be doomed to defeat at the hands of Clinton. A few even fear he could be a “plant” by Democrats, given his past liberal positions, his seven financial donations to Clinton campaigns and her attendance with husband Bill at his third wedding in 2005.

In vehemently denouncing Trump last week, Mitt Romney, the defeated 2012 Republican nominee tacitly sketched out a “contested convention” scenario whereby the front-runner’s three remaining rivals stayed in the race to deny him the chance of getting the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the nomination.

“Given the current delegate selection process, this means that I would vote for Marco Rubio in Florida, for John Kasich in Ohio, and for Ted Cruz or whichever one of the other two contenders has the best chance of beating Mr Trump in a given state,” Romney said.

Before Saturday, Trump had 329 delegates compared to 231 for Texas senator Cruz, 110 for Florida senator Marco Rubio and 25 for John Kasich, the governor of Ohio.

This is not the time for a softie GOPe candidate. Not at all!

1. North Korea, just yesterday. threating to attack us with nukes

2.The Iranian's with their newly acquired 150 billion dollars -can simply buy nukes now!

3. Mullah Obama has already begun flying in his preset goal of 170,000 Islamic Muslim rapefugees! How many of these 170,000 will eventually beat, rape and murder our fellow Americans. How many of these 170,000 will arrive here - and eventually pull out machine guns on us.

4. The illegal mexican horde currently here and the illegal mexican hordes always enroute here -taking millions upon millions of jobs from Americans (white, black and hispanic Americans), swarming our schools, bankrupting our hospitals, raping and murdering fellow Americans. [and all the very slimy democrat politicians welcoming them -as potential democrat voters]

I'm voting for Trump!

“plant” by Democrats, given his past liberal positions,

Gee, you don't say. Still can't figure out why a "conservative" would think Trump is an acceptable choice (not that Cruz is either).

RE: So why bother even voting...

Same question applies to Democrats.

SUPER DELEGATES hold the key to winning in their primaries and thus far, most are already pledged to support Hillary.

I keep hearing the “Trump would lose to Clinton” narrative but I just don’t see it. Every liberal Democrat I’ve talked to - young, old and in between - hate her. IMHO, the GOP could run a dead possum against Clinton and still win.

Interesting - I had been running the numbers on what Trump needed to get to clinch the nomination, and I calculated that he needed to get 54% of the remaining available delegates to get to 1237. But I hadn’t taken into account the unpledged/unbound delegates. Taking that into account, he needs to get almost 60% of the remaining delegates to be sure of getting to 1237. So that means he need to get about 90 delegates today just to stay on track...

According to his financial disclosure forms, Trump only has about $300 million in liquid assets. So unless Trump is going to sell off his businesses to pay for the campaign, Trump is going to have to raise BIG bucks if he gets the nomination - estimates are that the general election will cost about a billion. So doesn't what you are saying about Cruz also apply to Donald as well - if not now, then later?

I am not a Trump guy, but I am against some kind of brokered convention that completely undermines the will of the voters. If the GOP thinks they can nominate someone like Romney at the convention, they won’t know what hit them.

That said, I am not sure how things ought to go if Trump and Cruz get most of the delegates, but neither gets 1237. I realize there is a process, and not everyone will be happy. The GOP better tread carefully if it comes down to that, if they want the party to survive.
