I'll bet it's far worse than you think. The DOE has an annual budget of about $30 billion. There are about a hundred million taxpaying families or individuals in the US. That works out to about $300 per working family. However, half the working families pay little to no taxes at all, so that doubles your part to $600 per year.

YOU pay $600 per year for the DOE - ALONE!!!
