Clearly, the "professional" Washington establishment class is suffering through their sequential losses of Jeb! and the also-running and future losses of Kasich, Pataki, Graham, Fiorino, Christie, etc. Those efforts to dilute the field by loading 17 players on a weak bench have failed. Are still failing to win the hearts of the voters on both sides. Now, the DC class are climbing in Rubio's lifeboat and hanging onto the side of Kasich's over-inflated rubber raft, but we don't know if either lifeboat will capsize under the weight of too many consultants, or be empowered by the strength of extra oars and money.
In either case, to steal (er, win) the nomination from Cruz OR Trump, Washington's establishment MUST combine everything they now have together behind only one candidate, and destroy both Cruz and Trump as viable winners. Actually "winning" the final election against the democrats does not even seem to be a goal yet, the most skeptical observers wonder if it is a goal at all for some inside the DC power structure.
Regardless, BOTH Cruz and Trump are fighting each other, their enemies in the national press corpse, AND the democrats. It is a tough struggle for the one top spot on the republican ticket.
But what happens if Trump promises to nominate Cruz for the Supreme Court? Does he not positively answer the questions he has to fight off now about his liberal past and the anti-life positions he has taken? A Cruz nomination takes advantage of Cruz experience before the Court, adds him to the reasons why a current Cruz supporter wants to vote FOR Trump instead of unwillingly and depressingly accept an "anybody but establishment" excuse. As well, a Cruz Supreme Court nominee sidesteps completely the baggage his birthplace will be if Cruz is a VP nominee. Cruz Senate GOPe enemies -and they are going to be as vicious opposing Cruz as the democrats! - get sidelined: Take a vote once, then get him out of the running for future elected offices.
People will work FOR a positive idea much, much more enthusiastically than they will against one of a series of depressing bad choices.
A win for conservatives if he completed a long life.
But it would drive Oboma's national press corpse stark bonkers with hate and anger. But what else is different?
If he gets the nomination, can he get through the press corpse, consolidate Trump's and Rubio's supporters, AND fend off the constant democrat attacks from their ABCNNBCBS affiliates?
And don’t forget running the gauntlet of legal challenges from Democrats claiming he is not native born.
I could see that. I think that Trump should call Sessions as his VP choice.
Cruz on the Supreme Court would be a fantastic consolation prize if he does not get the nomination and Trump wins the general.
But i think there is too much bad blood between them now.
Giuliani would be a good AG.
Dr. Kevin Gutzman should be nominated to the SCOTUS. if he would take it.
After Trump and his Orc army have labeled Cruz the biggest liar ever, a slimy, sleazy, nasty, liar, do you really think there is any mending of fences coming?
Trump will pick from his sheep followers, he isn’t interested in uniting conservatives. Trump will pick his tag team buddy Rubio first.
Cruz does not have the charisma needed to win against Hillary , Trump has it, Cruz would make a excellent supreme court judge
Cruzes view on pro life and guns would could make him even a better supreme court judge then Scalia , plus he is young and could serve there for decades
After all, he's the one that has framed the race in terms of personal attacks & insults.
I personally like Trump 1, Cruz 2, but do think that the way the race is playing out, Cruz might want to finish the best he can to deny Rubio traction, help Trump indirectly and get himself set up for SCOTUS.
With regard to Rudy, I suggest him for DHS, with Christie as AG. This way, Christie can pay his penance with his anti-2A past and his indictment and conviction of Hillary and Bill. If Christie can put both Clintons behind bars, many prior sins will be forgiven by conservatives. Rudy can work during Trump’s administration to help fix ICE, ATF, etc.
Christie likely has a political future in 8 years, Rudy, not so much.
The bargaining stage...
Don’t be silly. How could Trump get Rubio approved for the court after he destroyed Cruz’ credibility? It would never happen.
I don’t think Cruz would accept ANYTHING less than V.P.
Sorry..
As the days have gone by I keep wondering why there is this “need” for Ted Cruz to “go” somewhere? He’s a first term Senator. Congress is a huge problem.
Because of the way his campaign has gone, I don’t think he’s ready for higher office yet. If Ted Cruz really wants to help the country, perhaps he should stick around in his current job and prove his chops more. Both he and Rubio missed a ton of votes in the Senate in 2015, Cruz something like 24%, second only to Rubio.
They both seem like they’re taking on a sense of entitlement WAY earlier than would even be warranted, if “entitlement” were a good enough reason to run for President (it isn’t).
Ted Cruz should stay where he is and help fix the mess. Isn’t that what he promised the voters of Texas?
~40 yrs of Cruz instead of 4 sounds pretty good.
I don’t think a President Trump would nominate a Cruz to SCOTUS. Being more a deal maker, he’d find some way to appeal to non-Conservatives in any choices.
OTOH, a President Cruz would be a in a great position to nominate 2, 3 or 4 SCOTUS appointees, all in the Scalia mold.
I think you are mis-reading the idea: Trump should promise to nominate Cruz for the Supreme Court to consolidate Cruz supporters behind Trump (if Cruz cannot pass Trump in the votes) but leave Rubio following orders back in the Senate. Rubio has too little experience to justify a SC nomination anyway. That wouldn't stop a democrat with equal experience, but the rules are different for a democrat. (If you are a democrat, there are no rules today>)
Cruz to SCOTUS.
Christie as AG or Rudy.
Carson for Surgeon General.
I have been saying this since the death of Judge Scalia. Cruz is much, much more important as a Supreme Court Justice over 30 years than a President over 8.
It would be a sacrifice to his aspirations but I think Sen Cruz as one of the only true conservative would be willing to make that it.
