Kansas Gov. Sam Brownback has become the first sitting governor to endorse Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida for president.

The Rubio campaign announced the endorsement Monday.

"Just like Governor Brownback, Marco has consistently defended life, small government and free enterprise throughout his career in public service," Rubio midwest spokesman Jeremy Adler said in a statement.

Kansas Republicans will caucus Mar. 5.

Brownback, a Republican who once ran for president, endorsed then-Texas Gov. Rick Perry in 2011. Perry was a candidate for the 2016 GOP nomination but withdrew.

"Marco Rubio has a proven track record of protecting life, defending religious liberty, and undoing Obamacare," Brownback's statement said. "He will be a wonderful president, and I am proud to offer him my full support."

Rubio will be 2nd behind Trump in SC. I’m calling it now.

The GOPe needs their “not Trump”, and Jeb isnt acceptable.

Florida will be a nuclear war.

ok I’m familiar with the concept of rats deserting a sinking ship, but I’m not clear on the phenomenon of people jumping ONTO a foundering vessel and declaring it sea worthy...

Marco Rubio is clearly the one person who can stop Trump. It is not Cruz. He is un-electable in the general and those don’t see it are just blind to the facts. Add together Bush, Kasich and Rubio and the picture is much different. If not for the flub in NH., Rubio would be better positioned. He may yet come back.

If I were Rubio I’d turn it down. Brownback’s negatives in Kansas polls are off the chart.

Thanks. I would at least like to see him go toe to toe with Trump. I think Rubio would try and beat him with real conservatism. I really don’t see what people see in Cruz. He can’t win.

Well, it cannot be Trump. We want a Republican president. Trump’s got nothing, nothing but scorn for Republicans. He will leave the party as soon as he’s defeated and mount a third party bid. That has been what I’ve believed all along. His circus, reality TV show act will bring along those who are loyal to the man, not the party, not the values of conservatism, not anything but this uniquely special man, TRUMP.

Can’t believe any Republican can vote for Trump after Saturday night. This Bush lied stuff is pure out of the Democratic playbook. And the defending of Plan Parenthood. The man is not a republican and sure the hell is not a conservative. People need to wake up.

“Rubio would try and beat him with real conservatism”
Real conservatism like amnesty and benefits for all illegal invaders? Think that will work? I realize that almost all republican politicians are amnesty whores but I suspect that most republican voters are not amused by that.

Not a good move for Sam - to remind Kansans that he was one of those working with John McCain in 2006 to give illegal aliens (even those in
prison for violent crimes, including rape) amnesty and citizenship!
