What is the virtue of keeping untapped oil reserves in the ground? The only underlying reason I have ever discerned is a petty jealousy of somebody possibly making a profit from extracting, refining, transporting and retailing it to consumers, who turn the energy source into a source of profit or personal convenience.
And “profit” only means that “more of the same” will be expanded into the future, and with it, an expanding number of human beings, of whom these self-anointed judges of history consider to be the greatest blight Earth has ever known.
The world is never going to run out of oil. Eventually, some time FAR in the future, there shall be adequate alternate sources (most probably from tapping of nuclear energy in some manner) so dependence on oil may decrease, and should it be necessary, it is possible to MANUFACTURE oil, to any specification and whatever quantity needed, from techniques already known today.
The “environmentalism” reasons set forth are mere pettifoggery, as rising profits provide the financial resources to clean up any environmental impact that may result, all as a part of doing business. But if these profits are taxed away for God knows what “preferred” government program, not necessarily applied to maintaining a clean environment, then that becomes just waste, missed opportunity, and poor allocation of resources.
