WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Pentagon says it briefly lost contact with two small Navy craft in the Persian Gulf on Tuesday but has received assurances from Iran that the crew and vessels will be returned safely and promptly.

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook tells The Associated Press that the boats were moving between Kuwait and Bahrain when the US lost contact with them.

Cook says, "We have been in contact with Iran and have received assurances that the crew and the vessels will be returned promptly."

Everyone remember the USS Pueblo (spy ship) taken off the coast of North Korea in the 1960s? Our guys in captivity, and the ship wasn’t scuttled in time to prevent Korean review of our technology.

I suppose now, the Iranians will have two of our ships to go along with our drone they got.

What kind of small boat could they take? Seals in inflatables?

Just checked Google Earth: it is over 200 miles from Bahrain to Kuwait. Helluva ways to go with an outboard RIB.

I’m hearing there was more to this story than what’s being reported.

Anyone got Navy contacts?

Secretary of State John Kerry, who has forged a personal relationship with Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammed Javad Zarif through three years of nuclear negotiations, called Zarif immediately on learning of the incident, according to a senior U.S. official.

I’m sure the “deal” to get our sailors/boats back will be as advantageous to us as the Iran nuke ‘deal’.

Navy landing craft (LCM’s if I recall) have a range of about 900 miles in calm seas. That is what I was told when I toured some amphibious ships in San Diego. The boat squadrons and landing craft are based across the bay in Coronado. I am sure there are some nervous Navy families today.

My “deal” would be the following: you want nukes, you may get them but not in the form you want them. Release them in 24 hours, unharmed with intact ships, or Teheran becomes a cinder.

They probably didnt have bullets. If they did they almost certainly couldn’t shoot without clearance.
