If Taylor Swift ever believed she had bad blood before, boy does she have it now. Over her birthday weekend, the young queen of pop watched a bomb with her name on it explode after the famed feminist critic Camille Paglia published a shockingly scathing attack on Swift, calling her a blond, elitist “Nazi Barbie.â€
Yes, such a cheap and sensationalist shot at a fellow female comes from one of America’s most well-known and respected feminist writers. Paglia is a self-proclaimed “notorious Amazon feminist†and isn’t exactly your stereotypical bra-burning, Birkenstock-wearing feminist. Her ideology is as nuanced as her interpretation of feminism is hard to pin down.
Nonetheless, Paglia is a feminist warrior at heart, fighting for every woman’s right to succeed, thrive and pursue her wildest dreams. Incidentally, Taylor Swift has done just that, becoming the de facto poster child of big-picture feminist philosophy. For Paglia to rip Swift to shreds, even stooping to associate her with fascism, is a lesson in hyperbolic hypocrisy.
Swift is a feminist’s dream mostly come true. She is young, smart, self-made, mind-bogglingly successful, in charge and fiercely independent, both in business and in her personal life; she is unmarried and runs her personal brand with an I-make-my-own-decisions attitude. Swift has power, control and command of her life, all the things today’s young women are told to pursue.
And Swift has a gently rebellious independence of character, too. She doesn’t bow to Hollywood’s pressure to strip and sex-scandal her way to the top, nor does she seem to have let the enormous weight of fame and wealth transform her into a vain, vacuous, self-obsessed starlet. Feminism is about being a victim. Swift refuses to play the role. Hence “Motormouth’’ Paglia’s cheap shot(and the fact that Paglia would love to jump Swifts bones).
Taylor Swift DOES look like Barbie, and I’d take the 26-year-old Paglia over the 26-year-old Swift any day. Paglia looks smart, like she has some depth; Swift looks vapid, but she’s probably not as vapid as she looks.

In the interest of fairness, I’ve been searching for Camille Paglia pretty, Camille paglia young, Camille Paglia attractive, Camille Paglia smiling....but in every picture she is the same sneering harridan.
(Plus came across a lot of quotes attributed to her which, if true, demonstrate that she is one seriously warped individual.)
Paglia is not a proponent of feminist victimhood. That is very far from her position.

In all probability, none of the photos you saw of Paglia were taken when she was under 45. Now, we can’t produce pictures of a 68-year-old Taylor Swift, but chances are she’ll not look as good then as she does now? Right?
I dunno.

Not any Barbie I’ve ever seen.
Barbie has breasts that look like half-footballs, while Taylor Swift is absolutely flat as a board, and absolutely gorgeous. (and I don’t care for skinny women)
The thing with Taylor and her fans is that they are really quite close. Of course she does sincere photo ops with cancer stricken fans. But she will even just show up at a young girl’s birthday party for the big happy surprise, even if the fan isn’t dying of cancer. She has come through for her fans in some really meaningful, quiet ways.
She also took that stand against Spotify and apple not paying enough to the artists. It didn’t benefit her; it benefited the up and coming, on a string budget new artists and bands. She was “big” enough to take the first stand and help them out.
She is smart and a good song writer. She deserves all of her success.
Swift’s FACE looks like Barbie, and I don’t consider the fact that she’s flatter than Barbie to be a plus.

Yes, Paglia does have classic features — and Swift probably won’t age well (absent botox, etc)
But Paglia’s problem appears to be that she is ugly on the inside — and that always shows through no matter what.
One of the lesser gifts of Taylor is her voice and ability to stay on tune. But she has amazing stage presence, she has delivery down pat. The songs are heartfelt and well done. Some are even quite funny. I forgive her her less than perfect voice. So does everyone else.
Heard Bruce Springsteen last night on SNL (taped) and he is an American music icon.... Quite the “sound,” his band, his voice, it’s amazing all put together, but he also doesn’t stay perfectly on key. It’s ok if the rest of your talent is that good.
