When the Muslims were fighting the Orthodox Christian Byzantines the Roman symbol for Christ was three fingers linked together to show the trinity. Christian would sometimes hold three fingers touching (thumb, index and middle) and the rest pointed down. It meant the Trinity and the human and divine nature of Jesus (2 fingers down).
Muslims began pointing one finger up in imitation and mockery to indicate God is singular and not a Holy Trinity. So one finger up means Islam.

Three reasons (and I’m not making this up):
1) One finger = One God. Muslims hold up one finger like that as a sign of belief, a testimony, to the one God.
2) Authority. Their imams and leaders often lecture them while holding up that one finger. It’s like saying, “Pay attention. Listen to my important words!”

I started reading about this “one finger” think last August.
