Trump retakes lead in Iowa; Cruz, Rubio rise as Carson fades (Jeb at 5% in IA, SC; 6% in NH)

Donald Trump has fended off a challenge by Ben Carson in the early voting state of Iowa and maintained his lead elsewhere, according to the latest wave of the YouGov/CBS News Battleground Poll.

30% likely Republican caucus goers in Iowa name Trump as their choice for the 2016 Republican presidential nomination. Carson, a retired neurosurgeon, receives 19% support, behind Sen. Ted Cruz of Texas who receives 21%. Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida receives 11%.

In a YouGov/CBS News poll last month, Trump and Carson were tied with 27% support each among voters in the Hawkeye State. Other polls even found Carson with narrow leads in Iowa and nationally, shaking up a race Trump had dominated for months. However, amid the increased scrutiny that accompanies front-runner status, questions have been raised about claims Carson has made about his personal history. Since October, support for Carson is 8 points lower in Iowa, two points lower in New Hampshire and five points lower in South Carolina.

If Trump wins these three he will be stronger than ever going into Florida.

Bush has essentially been running for president now for a couple of years. He has spent a lot of money, still has a lot of money, but can rarely gets into the high single digits. Even though it’s long past time for him to get out, I’m actually hoping he stays in, and is trounced so badly, and so humiliatingly, that no future Bush will even contemplate running for anything higher than dog catcher.

If Trump gets the Republican nomination, I hope that he plans to give Cruz the job of US attorney general instead of vice president. This is because I still have not figured out what the vice president does for a living. ;^)

Ain't that the truth!

However, I would rather see Cruz get the first available Supreme Court seat, and there are going to be a lot of them! I expect it could be as many as FIVE appointments! Ginsberg, Breyer, Scalia, Thomas, and HOPEFULLY Kennedy. As far as Attorney General, let's go with Edwin Meese's chief of staff - the Great One - Mark Levin. The confirmation hearings would be a hoot. And Rush could start calling him F. Lee. once again.

With Cruz, there's no doubt about it. There was never a person more appropriate for the job of Supreme Court Justice. Cruz dwarfs all of them including Robert Bork ( who would have burned us on the 2nd Amendment had he been appointed and had a case ended up before him ). Almost all appointments to the court are disappointments to our side. Only one has ever surpassed my expectations and that person is the great Clarence Thomas. I can easily see Justice Cruz running logical rings around the others and perhaps convincing some to his point of view. This is his God given talent.

I just wish he could become Chief Justice. An interesting scenario would be if a President-Elect Trump would ask for Roberts' resignation. We don't really know if this has been done before but I suspect it has. He could let him know that his idiotic logic with Obamacare "Penalty" vs "Tax" is the dumbest thing ever done in American jurisprudence and he really should get out of the way.

The Carson lead was probably real. His non politician status and nice guy manner played well. But then as he spoke more people realized he is not presidential material.

Indeed - it has become clear as time goes on he would not be able to handle the administrative duties of being President - especially in foreign policy.

Why would he appoint Cruz? That’s hardly in keeping with his liberal philosophy on judicial rulings. For example, he is an ardent supporter of the Kelo v. Connecticut ruling - so we can expect he will appoint judges with the same big government mindset - that would mean more Breyers, Ginsbergs, etc. He also believes his sister makes a good judge, who is one of the most liberal jurists on the bench. So Cruz is probably out of the picture as far as judicial appointments.

Bush’s candidacy never made sense. If another Bush was going to run for office they need to at least skip a generation (I’m not endorsing this - just speaking as to what would have been practical). In any event, it should be beyond clear that he is not going anywhere with his high name ID and all of the millions of dollars spent - it is a lost cause - pack up and go home.

"However, I would rather see Cruz get the first available Supreme Court seat, . . ."

That is fine. Cruz can leave his job as USAG and become Chief justice.

Oh come on. None of us, and that includes you, don't ever know anything for certain in politics. You think you know what's in another man's heart, but I assure you that you have as much chance as being wrong as you do as being right. Furthermore, whatever Presidential dream candidate you wish for is equally likely to take a crap in your punchbowl five minutes after they take the oath.

Besides, I was just expressing a hope. And a perfectly sensible and logical and Constitutional hope at that.

With five possible appointments I actually expect at least a couple of losers, that's practically a given considering the last one hundred years of history in the District of Criminals. But that's not to say we cannot root for and lobby for a Justice Cruz. The good news is that even Cruz as despised as he is by his peers, would likely get the traditional boy's club preference from his erstwhile fellow Senators.

As for Trump, who has also praised Alito, well he has done far more to assuage my fears than I would have ever expected by cozying up to TEA Partiers at a time when it is politically incorrect and practically a deathwish with respect to the media (and the GOPe). And he has made all the right enemies, my enemies, along the way.
