Rand Paul will filibuster debt ceiling bill
Washington Post ^ | 10/27/15 | David Weigel

DENVER -- in the face to conservatives." Likely speaker of the House Paul Ryan has said the process that created it "stinks." But Sen. Rand Paul (R-Ky.) is the first Republican to pledge outright that he'll try to scutter the compromise debt limit bill designed to kick any tough new vote into 2017.

"I will filibuster the new debt ceiling bill," Paul said at an event on the University of Colorado's Denver campus. "It is horrible, it's hard for me not to use profanity describing it."

Paul also called the bill a "steaming pile of legislation," and urged fellow Republicans to join him. But Paul made the same move in 2011, the first time that the debt limit became a serious bargaining chip between Congress and President Obama.

"We will filibuster until we talk about the debt ceiling, until we talk about proposals," Paul said then, after agonizing negotiations produced a similar punt of the hard votes. "We will actually vote in favor of raising the debt ceiling next week if we can, but it will be contingent on passing a balanced budget amendment to the Constitution."

In the end, the balanced budget amendment did not pass. The debt limit compromise did, without Paul's vote. But Paul's ambition for this bill is to deny unanimous consent on passage of the House bill, forcing the Senate to work through the weekend, ahead of the Nov. 5 debt limit expiration deadline stated by the Treasury. That, according to Paul's team, would give Freedom Caucus members -- already on record against the deal -- time and space to mobilize opposition.

Since making the decision, Paul has heard from a few other senators who would join him in the slow-down. Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Tex.) is not yet among them.

If it was a normal Senator, it might be a good idea.
But it’s Rand Paul, so it’s doomed to failure.

I hope he can slow it down so more get on board to veto this. Giving obummuh what he wants right now will give him the power to do all kinds of heinous things without worrying about consequences. This why this must not pass.

When you’re a curly-haired goofball, you’re a curly-haired goofball. When you’re patriotic and 100% right, you are so and deserve the support of like-minded patriots, whether congress critter or regular American.

Rand Paul On Shutdown: "Even Though It Appeared I Was Participating In It, It Was A Dumb Idea"
I said throughout the whole battle that shutting down the government was a dumb idea. Even though it did appear as if I was participating in it, I said it was a dumb idea. And the reason I voted for it, though, is that it's a conundrum. Here's the conundrum. We have a $17 trillion debt and people at home tell me you can't give the president a blank check. We just can't keep raising the debt ceiling without conditions. So unconditionally raising the debt ceiling, nobody at home wants me to vote for that and I can't vote for that. But the conundrum is if I don't we do approach these deadlines. So there is an impasse. In 2011, though, we had this impasse and the president did negotiate. We got the sequester. If we were to extend the sequester from discretionary spending to all the entitlements we would actually fix our problem within a few years.

Randy Baul is at it again, but at least someone is screaming about the stink, or otherwise there would be whimpering silence.

Rand Paul is a senator. He’s talking about what he will do when this bill gets to the senate.

So, Cruzers, will Ted assist? EVERY “conservative” should be involved in this filibuster. None will.

LOL! Hope it was tongue-in-cheek.

Rand proved himself unfit for President, but he may be of some use if he actually goes to bat as he says he will - Cruz and a few others can use some help.

Now for a short public service announcement to all on FR:
I prefer Cruz and my money goes to his campaign, hence the Cruz link. If you like someone else, donate to him/her (find your own link to do it) and if you use FR and don't donate, then please don't complain about the welfare leeches or those who have Obama Phones because, functionally, you are no different than any other FReeloader.....

GO CRUZ!! Keep it up Trump!!

Donate to Cruz

Donate to FR

Cruz, Lee and Rand need to put the GOPe on notice on this one. How can COLAs be zero, but the government budget grow?

Let’s not inflate government any more. The two year deal is garbage as well. It takes the fight off the table.

Raising the debt ceiling does infact REEK!

Good for Paul to put forth an effort to stop this GOPe Dim collusion AGAINST the future of the US!

Senators Lee, Cruz, Scott, need to join in. They helped with his previous filibuster. This also needs to gummy up the rubber stamp approval of Prince Paulie Ryan as Speaker.

DC is still not listening and good on Rand Paul for (literally) standing up for the electorate.

Every candidate would be best served to decry, but not fight, this deal.

Trump and Carson have the support to actually stop it if they wish.
But the media would saddle them with blame for the “shutdown”.

The RINOs were smart to make this a short process. Wasn’t expecting that.

No. That argument means you never ever make a stand because it will affect an election.

David Weigel has best look up the definition of "scutter" before his wording scuttles his article.
