I agree with you. As soon as her periods stopped, she should have known
that she was pregnant, and she should have had the IUD removed back then.
Every woman who has an IUD implanted should read up extensively about the
things that can go wrong that harm the mother and the developing fetus.
Plenty can go very, very wrong. The doctor should have been a lot more
careful when she removed the IUD, rather than wrenching it out without
checking for a pregnancy. The quote, “...haven’t had a period for five
months...” from the pregnant woman should have been her first clue.
But this woman was an idiot to be so ignorant about what she did to her
body and to her baby. Some people aren’t meant to procreate, sadly.
While I appreciate your agreement, my point was a little broader than that.
The IUD can act as an abortifacient. In other words, it can block an already-created child, a person, from gaining access to the sustenance it needs to survive. Which is no different morally than locking your five year old in a closet with no food and water until they are dead.
She shouldn’t have had the thing put in the first place.
None of which makes this doctor any less culpable, of course.
