Israel erects wall to protect Jews in east Jerusalem

Jerusalem (AFP) - Israeli police on Sunday began erecting a wall in east Jerusalem to protect a Jewish neighbourhood subject to firebomb and stone attacks launched from an adjacent Palestinian village.

The wall would effectively divide Palestinian Jabel Mukaber and Jewish Armon Hanatziv, raising criticism among the government's opposition, which considered the move a de facto division of Jerusalem.

As of Sunday, police had placed six slabs below Jabel Mukaber, each about 2.5 metres (yards) high and two metres long. Black lettering in Hebrew at the bottom of the slabs read "temporary mobile police barrier".

The municipality said the wall would eventually cover a 300-metre strip, stressing it would not be peripheral and it was being placed where "there is a history of stone and firebomb throwing at Jewish homes and cars".

Jabel Mukaber has been a hotspot in the recent wave of violence in which 42 Palestinians and seven Israelis have been killed, raising fears of a full-blown Palestinian uprising grew.

Three residents of the village had killed three Israelis in two separate attacks in Jerusalem on Tuesday before being killed by security forces. . .

Walls work.

Good fences make good neighbors. And bad neighbors make good fences even more necessary.

Walls don’t work! They’ll just bring a bigger ladder! Acts of love! Amnesty for undocumented Israelis!

How many rounds of 125mm would it take to level the Al Aqsa mosque?

I am very concerned for Israel, and the world. Evil everywhere will ct now since Obama’s term will be up soon. Just rotten, dangerous time. I hope Israel does what they need to do.

A wall equals a defense. Better than nothing, but most effective when paired with an offense!

Um, while it is better than nothing, it is not “all you can do.” Just saying...

How many rounds of 125mm

Available from local T-72s, no less!

It might take a hundred or so rounds but you could have a lottery for which round would cause the roof to collapse and so on. The lottery could be used as a fundraiser to purchase pork for prisoners in the jails.

The time is coming when the current situation will become totally untenable. When you look at a map of Israel, you have the Gaza Strip blocking a portion of the coast and the West Bank jutting deep into Israel. To have volatile, hostile populations maintaining sea-access and nearly bisecting your country is just not practical.

The Israelis are going to have to fully take control over both areas, and decide how to handle the Palestinians who will never be safe, reliable citizens. There is really no way to handle the issue except possibly re-gifting the Palis to the other Arab nations, whether the recipients want them or not. But the Palestinians potentially have some bite, as the US has been training and equipping P.A. "security forces" for nearly a decade. I wonder if it would even be possible now for Israel to handle the issue. They might have missed their chance.
