And what American fighter pilot in his right mind is going to “shoot down” a commercial airliner when their is no foreknowledge of what the problem is?

When a flight scheduled from Boston to Los Angeles turns off its radio and transponder and heads toward New York City, it is pretty apparent it is not an electrical or mechanical problem.

A pilot shoots down a jet on orders, not because he makes that decision himself.
