Deal approved to protect grizzly bear habitat in Montana ( Donald Molloy )

A U.S. judge on Friday approved a deal between conservationists and Montana officials to restrict road-building and logging in roughly 22,000 acres of state forest lands that make up core habitat for federally protected grizzlies.

The agreement resolves a lawsuit brought by conservationists after the state had sought to open 37,000 acres , mostly in the Stillwater State Forest, to timber harvesting despite what environmentalists said would be the destruction of prime grizzly bear territory.

...

U.S. District Judge Donald W. Molloy in a decision last year found the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service violated the Endangered Species Act by issuing a permit to Montana for the project opening up the expanse to the timber industry.

Montana appealed the judge's ruling and conservation groups later appealed separate parts of the decision, leading to a stalemate that set the stage for both sides to hammer out a settlement.

Molloy approved the agreement on Friday, said attorney Tim Preso of the firm Earthjustice

...

The settlement comes after a federal-state panel managing grizzly bears in and around Yellowstone National Park, mostly in Wyoming, said a separate population of about 700 bears has recovered and recommended they be stripped of federal protections.

The Fish and Wildlife Service is expected to make a decision on delisting soon.

I live on the fringe of grizzly range in B.C. One visited a neighbour’s yard just last week - berries are done, and the fish haven’t commenced spawning up the Lardeau. They are hungry boys!

Oh well, they’ll put the run on the black bears that hang around gardens and fruit trees this time of year!

When you see a grizzly, you’re suddenly aware of what “top of the food-chain” means. It’s great for humility.

Infamous Judge Don Molloy Stepping Down / taking senior status ; we could start by having a federal judge in Missoula who starts showing a little balance of his own. As it stands now, Montanans are held hostage by the “Iron Curtain” of Judge Molloy and the 9th Circuit Court of Appeals.

Don’t stuff your stocking too soon though, even though the ultra-partisan federal judge is stepping down to “senior” status- that doesn’t mean he is going away.

I sure wish there was, Fly.

As george76 posted, this enviro-nazi U.S. District Jerk Molloy has been on Sr. status for quite awhile and just keeps coming back to support his enviro-nazi buddies.

I doubt he'll go away until the day he goes in the ground and starts pushing daisies, hope he feels at home doing that.

Darn, I thought they were sending our governor, Nathan Deal up to Montana to protect the habitat from grizzly bears.

****..to timber harvesting despite what environmentalists said would be the destruction of prime grizzly bear territory. ***

Let the timber grow! In the future a lightning strike and fire will take care of the timber and the griz.

Hate grizzlies. And wolves. Say goodbye to elk and caribou people...the herds are in major decline in the west.

George, I’m on the Grizzly Bear’s side.

If I were super wealthy, I would buy the land between Yellowstone and the Canadian border, because that area, running north and south, *is* the Grizzly Bear corridor.

It means there is only one state between Yellowstone and the Canadian border, and with enough money after their land sale, perhaps the corridor residents would all retire to Florida or Arizona.

The entire population of Montana is about one million. Wonder how many people live in the Grizzly Bear Corridor?

The Bear corridor may be about fifty to one hundred miles wide.

I believe in repopulating parts of the United States to wolves and bears: Golden Gate Park, Griffin Park, Central Park, Rock Creek Park, Boston Common, for example.
