Just the logistics alone of attempting this are mind-boggling. ..the probability of the candidate losing is very high, and so it appears an attempt to give the election to Democrats if the party doesn’t succeed in duping the electorate into choosing an “acceptable” candidate.

I think the party would rather see Hillary or Biden elected than Trump. They think they could work with one of them...look how good they've worked with obama. They're used to being doormats. They're comfortable with the way things are. The GOPe doesn't want to do anything that might endanger their perks, personal privileges and power.
