Three-term Delaware Rep. John Carney has filed paperwork to run for governor.
In a statement Wednesday, Carney said he had planned to back the states late attorney general, Beau Biden, for governor and stay in the House. But after Biden passed away in May from brain cancer, Carney reconsidered.
Beau knew there are big challenges facing our state and he would have been the man to meet them. Like so many across our state, I wish hed had that chance, Carney said.
Yet, a season after Beaus passing, were confronted with the fact that those same challenges Beau was ready to face still loom large along our states horizon. And someone has to step up to meet them.
Carney said he does not plan to start actively campaigning until next year. But establishing a campaign committee allows him to begin raising money for his gubernatorial bid.
This will be Carneys second gubernatorial bid. He lost the 2008 primary to now-Gov. Jack Markell, who is term-limited and has said he will support Carneys campaign. Sen. Tom Carper put out a statement Wednesday afternoon endorsing Carneys candidacy. And Carney told the Delaware News Journal that Vice President Biden had encouraged him to run.
Carney represents Delawares only congressional district, and its a safe seat for Democrats. Party operatives mentioned several possible successors to Carney in the House. But as its still early, they expect many more names to emerge in the coming months.
State Sen. Bryan Townsend, a corporate lawyer in Wilmington, had been considering a campaign since the summer. If theres a vacancy, Im strongly considering seeking the office, he told local reporters in June.
State Rep. Bryon Short, a small-business owner who chairs the House Economic Development Committee, has also openly talked about his interest, telling the Delaware News Journal earlier this year that if Carney decided to run, the seat would be something that we have an interest in.
Given Delawares small size, any state legislator represents a relatively small fraction of the electorate and thus doesnt start with a significant base, one mid-Atlantic Democratic operative cautioned.
And Markell will take his place. And the incest continues. And there is no GOP in Delaware.
And the guy who is planning to take his seat is a Dem who introduced a bill to make Delaware a sanctuary state. Just what we need down in the cesspool in Washington.
Really sad not even an appearance of a choice.
Actually, we do have a declared Republican candidate for the seat. Hans Reigle, an ex town mayor, airline pilot, party official, etc., is giving it a try but this is a welfare state and the conservative folks like Hans have an uphill battle without a “D” by their name.
Kudos to him for even making an attempt. Thank you for the information.
Found an article about him:

Sounds sensible:
“I want to concentrate on bringing jobs, especially manufacturing jobs, to Delaware. I want education to be locally controlled. I think there is a lot of wasteful spending in government that could be reduced. And I want a strong military and security for our country.”
He has been a Congressman for years and has nothing to advance any of those items he has listed.
I call his office in DC regularly and get back weaselly written letters explaining his Dem positions on everything.
He also voted for the Iran deal.
He is a puppet of Biden and Obama.
We have close to one million people in DC---and ONE Congressman.
And he votes straight Dem party positions with abandon.
Previous post: “DC” = “DE”.
Anyone know anything about the conservative running for DE governor: Lacey Lafferty:
That was from the article related to the Republican that wants to take his seat...not Carney.
Thanks for that information on the challenger. I didn’t know who was running on the R side. Maybe someone can post some more information about her.
Sorry, bm, was scanning too quickly.
sounded like more lies from Carney.
Hans Reigle sounds good.
No problem. Easy to do when just reading posts and context from previous one is not shown. :)
And do you really think the Dems lie? lol.
Wants to win? Then fight dirty. Run campaign ads with Pelosi’s picture superimposed on his body. Caption it: Vote for him; she’s what you get. Ad #2 Opponent speaking and Pelosi holding strings.
