Police announce no charges for clock deemed 'hoax bomb'

Update at 11:20 a.m. Wednesday: At a press conference this morning, Irving Police Chief Larry Boyd said charges won't be filed against Ahmed Mohamed, the MacArthur High School freshman arrested Monday after bringing what school officials and police described as a "hoax bomb" on campus.

Boyd said the device -- confiscated by an English teacher despite the teen's insistence that it was a clock -- was "certainly suspicious in nature.

"The student showed the device to a teacher, who was concerned that it was possibly the infrastructure for a bomb," Boyd said.

School officers questioned Ahmed about the device and why he'd brought it to school. Boyd said Ahmed was then handcuffed "for his safety and for the safety of the officers" and taken to a juvenile detention center. He was later released to his parents, Boyd said.

"The follow-up investigation revealed the device apparently was a homemade experiment, and there's no evidence to support the perception he intended to create alarm," Boyd said.

“If it’s not a bomb, my name’s not Ahmed Muhammed!”

....and there's no evidence to support the perception he intended to create alarm,

Precursor training and dry runs rarely do 'intend to create alarm'....that's their purpose.

[”I was really mad,” Ahmed said as looked at at a much-retweeted photo of himself in handcuffs. “I was like, ‘Why am I here?’” A Council on American Islamic Relations representative then hustled Ahmed and his family off to talk to a lawyer.]

He can sympathize with the kid who was hustled off for chewing a poptart into the shape of a gun and the other kid who was suspended for twirling a pencil menacingly.

Let’s see... He disassembled a digital clock, put it in a briefcase and set it to go off during class. His sisters were present with their cellphone ready to capture what happened. He got in trouble and the police came and his sister caught it all.

When it was on youtube and was trending his sister yelled, “it’s number 1!.”

His father (Muhammed Muhammed) got notariety a few years back for supporting a koran burning. It sounds like a family looking for attention.

Pretty sad when I don’t know which is worse. The Dry run terrorist or the bubble wrapped school authorities spreading pussification.

Both intend to destroy everything good, right and just in America.

Less than four years after Pearl Harbor, we had won.

Fourteen years after 9/11, we are still losing - both on external battlefields and on civil rights at home.

The collapse of the towers broke America. And nobody seems to know how to put it back together again.

Not wait a minute!

I thought this was something he actually made from the ground up. Like with actual soldering and electronic components.

It looks like he just took apart an digital alarm clock and attached it to some sort of case. What type of skill is that?

Combine a kid with a penchant for electronics with an English Teacher who has 'seen bombs on TV', and a name like Ahmed and someone is going to look like an idiot. He had showed it to his engineering teacher who advised him to not show it to any of the other teachers, but the alarm went off in English class.

I can buy the 'bright kid, dumb teacher' angle.

But if little Ahmed had been named Jimmy and had a Confederate Flag on his pencil case and built this, would this have happened?:

(from the link) Shortly after the press conference, President Barack Obama extended a Twitter invitation for Ahmed to bring his "cool clock" to the White House. "We should inspire more kids like you to like science. It's what makes America great," the tweet read.

I think we know the answer.

I could be mistaken but it looks like he hooked a digital clock to a circuit board and the board to a battery connector. Seems like a needlessly complicated way to power a clock.

The little briefcase looking thingy is a pencil case, (look at the plug), and appears to be roughly 8 inches wide. Not a full sized briefcase. At least he didn’t chew his pop-tart into the shape of a pistol.

That’s just sad … and pathetic. What’s wrong with this world?!

The collapse of the towers broke America. And nobody seems to know how to put it back together again.

Disagree. The collapse brought us together. Division set in later when the Dems decided the war was wrong after all. That’s what broke us. Now we’re stuck with political correctness run amok.
