Donald Trump: I Will Know The Difference Between Hamas And Hezbollah 'When It's Appropriate'

4 September Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump did not take kindly in a radio interview on Thursday to being asked to identify the affiliations of various militant leaders in the Middle East, saying the host was asking “a gotcha question”.

Discussing Islamist extremism, conservative talk-radio host Hugh Hewitt told Trump he was looking for the next president to identify the leaders of major militant groups, naming the heads of Islamic State, Hezbollah, al-Qaida and its Nusra Front wing in Syria.

“Do you know the players without a scorecard yet, Donald Trump?” asked Hewitt, who will co-moderate the next official Republican presidential debate on 16 September in California.

“No, you know, I’ll tell you honestly, I think by the time we get to office, they’ll all be changed. They’ll be all gone,” Trump replied.

“The names you just mentioned, they probably won’t even be there in six months or a year,” he added.

Hassan Nasrallah has headed Hezbollah since 1992.

Hewitt pushed Trump on the question, asking him: “So the difference between Hezbollah and Hamas does not matter to you yet, but it will?”

Trump replied: “It will when it’s appropriate. I will know more about it than you know, and believe me, it won’t take me long.”

The billionaire real estate mogul has risen to the top of the polls in a crowded Republican field more than a year before the November 2016 election.

When Hewitt said these were not meant as “gotcha” questions, Trump responded: “Well, it sounded like gotcha. You’re asking me names that, I think it’s somewhat ridiculous, but that’s OK. Go ahead, let’s go.”

I got into a big Twitter battle with Guy Benson over this. I thought overall it was a good Trump interview. I didn't know the Quds. I have a PhD and follow current events. Until you're really ready to do something, Trump is right. Who would have seen ISI three years ago when Al-Qaeda was the threat?

Hewitt did ask Fiorina and she nailed it. But Walker dodged, and a couple of others, if you read the transcripts, were spoon fed the details in the question. Trump wasn't. So Fiorina, Rubio and Cruz (the last two because of committee assignments and secret briefings) do know this. But if not fed the answers, none of the governor's know the answer.

It was a gotcha, but Trump takes almost every question.

Senators and House members on appropriate committees would. It's part of their job. Those same senators wouldn't have a clue about building specifications. Red tape in construction, or ANYTHING ELSE they aren't briefed on. Give Trump just two national security briefings and see what he knows.

In the meantime, I bet he knows enough to put John Bolton at State, Ted Cruz at Justice, etc.

As I am currently writing a bio of RR I can definitely say that his greatest mistake was in failing to know the dynamics of the Mideast in Lebanon. He blew it, but to his credit within a year, he began to figure it out---the first pres to see radical Islam for what it was.

But I doubt the nickcarraway would give Trump four years that Reagan was given to figure it out.

“They have great money because they have oil. Every place where they have oil I would knock the hell out of them. I would knock out the source of their wealth, the primary sources of their wealth, which is oil. And in order to do that, you would have to put boots on the ground. I would knock the hell out of them but I’d put a ring around it and I’d take the oil for our country.

So draft dodger Donald wants to put "boots on the ground" and sacrifice Americans for oil.

Sick and disgusting.

Better answer than most - He knows that if he tries to become an “expert” in every aspect, then he will foul things up - it’s why God invented expert advisors and why smart folks hire them....

Look it up. Trump failed out of Fordham, and then his daddy bought him a degree at Wharton
.......................................................

Winston Churchill failed Sixth Grade. General Patton mixed up his words because he was dyslexic. Albert Einstein failed a college entrance exam, and many others who went on to change the world failed at something or other, most of the time because they were not interested. Whether or not Trump failed Fordham is not important. As for Wharton, one does nit “buy” a degree from Wharton. Harvard,Yale, or Princeton, maybe, but not Wharton.

You’re all wet with your arguments. Come up with something valid!

When his daddy died, Trump had already made his fortune. His father’s estate was divided up among all the children. Come up with another lie and you’ll be caught again.

What Trump is saying is that you destroy their economy and he is absolutely right. Too bad so many of you “brilliant” light bulbs cannot grasp that fact.

ook it up. Trump failed out of Fordham,

Can you back up this assertion? I have looked, and can't find anything. Are you trying to claim that everyone who transfers from one college to another that happens to have their desired specialty "failed out" of the first school?

Dirka Dirka Dirka

These guys join AQ, ISIS etc and give themselves new names. Who cares what their name is, look for the folks chopping off heads and blood drenched hands.

I am glad the author identified Trump as the next President.

“It was an ABSURD gotcha question..”

I agree. I also admit that I don’t know every faction in the Middle East, the various names of their leaders.

Our own government can’t decide what to call some of them (ISIS, ISIL, for instance).

This is an example of the use of political nuance, and the failure of foreign policy and strategy - that we draw a distinction between an Islamic enemy depending if they are called “Quds”, “Taliban”, “Hezbollah” or “Hamas”. Or if they are “Shiite”, “Sunni”, “Wahabbi”....or if our supposed “friends” are “Saudi Arabia” or “Turkey”.

If we can’t kill enough of our enemies to simplify such a list - then what the hell are we spending $Trillions of dollars in that part of the world?

I believe you are truly sick. Unhinged to say the least.

The freaking world is on fire and Cruz can’t break single digits, Walker is a bust and we have a man with heart and soul who wants to help and you post this garbage over and over.

You and your little fellow haters disgust me.

I have an idea, how about YOU run for office, show us all how it’s done.
.......................................................

Bravo.

Who in the devil do you think you are to constantly harangue and insult every person on this site who disagrees with you. I did not appoint you my teacher, adviser, or affiliate. YOU are entitled to YOUR opinion, but it is just that....OPINION. Your vitriol against a far finer man than you smacks of JEALOUSY. You harp far too much on how rich Trump is. Your IQ cannot be too high because it is extremely limited to vomiting insulting innuendo against those who have achieved more than you as well as those who disagree with you..

As Trump noted, being an effective leader does not involve being proficient in “Middle East Trivial Persuit”. Things change. Hewitt’s question did not measure how fast the candidate could study up on the facts.
