Kim Davis, a Kentucky clerk who refused to issue gay marriage licenses got some rather bad news today, as a judge held her in contempt and has ordered her to jail.
Here are the details so far.

A federal judge has ordered a Kentucky clerk to jail after she refused to issue marriage licenses to same-sex couples.
Kim Davis, a clerk in Rowan County, was found in contempt of court on Thursday morning. She has said granting marriage licenses to gay and lesbian couples would “violate God’s definition of marriage” and infringe on her personal beliefs as an Apostolic Christian.
District Court Judge David Bunning has said Davis is bound by an oath of office to perform her duties under the law, and ordered that she be jailed until she complied with his order to grant licenses.
Bunning has upheld the Supreme Court’s decision in June to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide, and wrote last month after the contempt lawsuit was filed that the state is merely forcing her to do her job within the law.
Davis, a registered Democrat, had worked as a deputy clerk for 27 years before voters in Rowan County elected her as clerk last November.
As an elected official, she can only be removed in a vote by state legislators, who don’t reconvene in the State House until January. While Davis certainly has the right to not be forced to do something against her conscience and religious beliefs, I feel that her continued refusal hasn’t really helped her cause any.
Rather than allow this get so far out of hand, perhaps she should’ve alerted the media to what was going on and then quit her job, using the exposure she would get from the situation to show her dedication to Christ and the gospel, which would be a super powerful testimony to believers and unbelievers alike.
Davis hasn’t chosen that course of action though, and it’s totally up to her to decide to do what she feels is best. I would’ve refused to issue the licenses as well, and would’ve walked out the door as a result.
Hopefully this will get resolved soon in a peaceful manner.

Exactly. And when did a judge acquire the power to write laws for individual states?
What did the law say specifically, Judge? And what does the new law now say?
And, why was this woman a fully compliant, legal civil servant of the law prior to Scotus, but now by some ex post facto ruling she is found to be a criminal.
The cleansing of the American civil authorities branches has begun. You have the “approved beliefs of the people” or you are imprisoned or forced to resign.

And? If she's not the one issuing the license, or taking any part in the issuance or processing of the form, how does the fact that her name is on the form (as a technicaly matter, in her official capacity as clerk) violate her religious freedom in any way?
You can treat illegal aliens like US citizens and prevent federal agents from deporting them.

She IS following the law. The law (and I believe the Constitution) in the Commonwealth of Kentucky forbids marriages between persons of the same sex.
There is no new law, the Supreme Court cannot write laws, and its decisions in particular cases are just that, decisions with regard to particular cases.
The repetition by gutless politicians of the absurdity "it's the law of the land" makes me sick. The only laws in Kentucky are laws passed by the people, or laws passed by Congress and signed by the President that are within Congress's granted powers.
Now, Amendment XIV does say Congress has the power to effect its provisions by appropriate legislation, so, in theory, Congress could pass a national same-sex marriage statute. But Congress has not done so.

SHE was the one ELECTED to uphold KY law, and now you say it’s ok for her to pass that responsibility off on her subordinates?

Also, and this is the legal fact, there is no authority in Kentucky to issue a license. While the old statute has been struck down, a new one has yet to be legislated.
Under which law do you want her to issue? The one that has yet to be written or the one that is no longer in effect?
