One of the Senates biggest supporters of firearm background checks is renewing calls for Congress to fix the system in the light of a deadly theater shooting in Lafayette, La.
Sen. Joe Manchin (D-W.Va.) said Sunday that Congress should shut down the loophole that allows some mentally ill people, like the Louisiana movie theater shooter, to slip through the governments system for vetting gun sales.
Right now, I need Republican help, said Manchin, a moderate Democrat has led the push to reform background checks.
I need my friends on the Republican side of the aisle to help us with a most reasonable, sensible path forward, he said in an appearance with CBSs Face the Nation.

At the very least, once more and more voters stop having the mindset of “needing to vote for the lesser of two evils” the GOP can do what it does best! Lose elections.
Only after they keep losing will they learn that they are supposed to be an OPPOSITION PARTY.
we have compromised more than enough already and I use the word “compromise” very loosely. Acquiesced would be more accurate.
Why is it that they expect more checks on my gun ownership than they do for nuclear weapons in Iran?
And Yertle says, “Yessa Massa.”
That is a sad state of affairs!
I remember when Toomey primaried Snarlin’ Armen Specter; he was a conservative firebrand!
Any idea what happened to him to cause him to go to the dark side?
He wants to continue to be invited to the cocktail parties?
Not sure what motivates Toomey and at this point I don’t care. I am done with him.
Manchin is in more need of Republican help to fix the W. Va coal industry that his party’s leader has killed.
Dumb ass Toomey thinks he will ingratiate himself with the Philly and Pittsburg Papers
They never learn
Kentucky is the weirdest ...they really hate Obama...yet they elect a true left lunatic governor....puzzling.
Background checks turn a God given right into a government granted privilege. No background checks. They don't work anyway.
Toomey is a corporatist not a conservative.
Pre-globalism these were somewhat aligned as ideologies because what was good for GM was good for America. Today the globalist corporate movement sees our Constitution, Bill of Rights (including 2A), and national sovereignty as a threat to their power,an annoyance, and disruptor to cheap labor and to their bottom line
Any "fix" is going to toward gun registration, confiscation, and the extermination of gun owners.
NO NO NO.
Will not comply.
The political elites on both sides work to destroy our rights and take away our 2A and our once homogenous low crime educated English speaking culture, and instead create a criminal society that starts out with their first step as illegal immigrants.
Here we go again, THESE GUN CONTROL FREAKS ARE AT IT AGAIN. When these people can show me how they can disarm criminals, without disarming the normal law abiding citizens, I’ll listen to what they have to say. The problem I will always have with every body registering their weapons to this government, or any government, is what will these people do that registered their weapons to the government, what’s to prevent the government to just take the weapons away from those that registered their weapons? You say they’ll never do that? Just remember what they did after the hurricane Katrina. The New Orleans government decided to go to every house that registered their weapons, and confiscate them. To this day, no weapons have ever been returned. The government of New Orleans PROMISED that they will NEVER take those guns away.
“Kentucky is the weirdest ...they really hate Obama...yet they elect a true left lunatic governor....puzzling.
No kidding! They must be hitting the Jack Daniels (from their “next door neighbor,” Tennessee) too hard. And worst of all, they keep electing the “post turtle” Mc Connell!
If you give them ONE INCH on gun control, even so-called “Common Sense Gun Control” (yeah right), then they will take 500 MILES.
We know the risks involved with the 2nd amendment and the right to bear arms. Every now and then we will have a big tragedy where a crazy guy shoots up a dozen innocents. The 2nd amendment is worth that risk, because it protects us from a crazy tyrant murdering a dozen million of us in the name of an impossible utopia.
