The military spends a pitiful little amount of time at the range or on gun handling. For most soldiers, basic training is about it.

I enlisted in the USN in 1951 and was sent to the Rhode Island boot camp. We trained with 1903 Springfields that had the firing pin removed. It seemed that when the recruits were sent to the range to fire the M1 Garands**, some idiots brought back extra ammo, loaded the Springfields, and "Oops, sorry about that hole in your head, Johnny".

**[Sidebar I] The instructors had a cool lo-tech way of simulating the Garand's recoil. They'd pair us up - one guy would be belly down, facing downrange with an unloaded but cocked M1. The other guy would lie on his back, alongside, facing the "shooter".
When the trigger was pulled, at the sound of the "click", the guy on his back would slam the palm of his hand vertically against the retracting handle and recock the weapon. Dunno how they kept it from locking open, since there were no clips.
[Sidebar II]. When they showed us a movie about shooting the M1, we all laughed when, after the eighth shot, the clip flew out. We all thought the gun blew up.

Same here, on 1950s Fleet Boats in Key West, FL. The routine was for the deck watch to hand the belt holstered M1911 over to your replacement. It had a loaded magazine, but the chamber was clear.

I had the midwatch one night, came topside, and saw the guy near the stern, gun in hand. I hailed him as I approached and he handed me the belt and pistol, saying "Be careful, it's loaded." I gingerly checked it out - hammer was back but the safety was on. Still, I nearly crapped, and asked why.

Talk about weird. We were the seventh boat out, moored alongside the tender, no moon and quiet as a tomb. There was a distant floodlight off the tender, but that was it. The guy said he was near the stern and heard a woman softly moan. With neck hair standing up straight, he unbuttoned the flap on the holster and went all the way aft. Another moan. He said he could almost hear the Twilight Zone music, so he took gun in hand.

Third moan, almost at his feet, and the guy racks the slide, going on full alert. There's a splash along side and in the faint light from the tender, he sees a porpoise breaching and moaning as it expels the air. Major comic relief.

I asked him why he didn't unload the pistol and he said he was afraid that in the dark, the round would fall in between the wooden deck slats. He was headed towards the conning tower to clear it in the light when I came on duty. I never thought about it until later but he was SO spooked, he might have shot me.

LOL. Similar story from 1987. I’m on a Skipjack boat in Groton and the topside watch heard a noise at night and chambered a round. It turned out be nothing, so he went to unchamber the round: pulled the mag, racked the slide, and the round hits the deck.

The VERY curved deck of an SSN. Splash. Not a good night for the CDO.

Well, I wasn’t sure exactly what you meant, which is why I asked.
I’ve seen, in the past, that some conservatives are capable of a reasonable conversation, but I see that you aren’t one of them. This is one of many reasons why liberals are winning, in my opinion. Less telling people who have questions about your ideas to shut up and more rational explanation of them might be called for in the future.
But I have a baseball game to watch so carry on, I suppose.

I figured that you’d walk away when asked to explain the “politics” of Condition 3 35 years ago, especially in light of the fact that the legendary Jeff Cooper thought it was a legitimate posture for carrying a handgun.

Condition 3 is not illogical. For the record, I do not carry in Condition 3 since a concealed handgun carrier already has enough disadvantages in a situation requiring a gun but I do carry my rifle in Condition 3 when I hunt. I am really only disagreeing with your assertion that Condition 3 is “political” and not rooted in safety for people who are not standing watch in an actual conflict zone (such as being an uninvited civilian “guard” standing guard in front of a strip mall).
