Donald Trump Says McCain No War Hero: ‘I Like People Who Weren’t Captured’
The Daily Caller ^ | 7-18-2015 | Jamie Weinstein

Donald Trump escalated his feud with Republican Arizona Sen. John McCain Saturday in a way that probably wasn’t the most politically astute.

Appearing at the 2015 Family Leadership Summit in Iowa, Trump decided to make the case that McCain is not a war hero. Asked by moderator Frank Luntz why he would call a war hero like McCain a “loser,” Trump replied, “He’s not a war hero.”

“He’s a war hero because he was captured,” Trump said sarcastically. “I like people who weren’t captured, I hate to tell you.”

McCain spent five and a half years in a North Vietnamese prison where he was routinely tortured after his plane was shot down during the Vietnam War.

After hearing boos from the crowd, Trump backed off a bit: “Perhaps he’s a war hero but right now he said some very bad things about a lot of people.”

Trump was referring to McCain calling the people who attended Trump’s recent immigration rally in Arizona “crazies.”

“This performance with our friend out in Phoenix is very hurtful to me,” McCain recently told the New Yorker magazine, speaking of Trump’s July 11 rally. “Because what he did was he fired up the crazies.”

The Washington Post reported Friday that Trump is trying to recruit a primary challenger in Arizona to try to defeat McCain in his 2016 re-election bid.

I don’t mind the political shots, but we don’t need elementary school taunts in a presidential candidate.

Game, Set, Match. Spot-on point.

If this doesn't derail Trump's campaign by itself, the accumulation of stupid statements like this will certainly will certainly see his rise to the top crash and burn -- HARD.

It’s one thing if you want to be critical of McCain’s performance as a Senator. However, his service in the military and the ordeal that he went through as a prisoner of war should be respected, not ridiculed.

I get how he slapped McCain I’m glad he did it. And he’s right about him.

However, when he brings in the others who have not and would never call themselves war heroes he is terribly wrong

They are all heroes of virtue and character. None of them would say they don’t regret getting shot down

Trump is unaware of what they were up against.

He’ll either walk it back or have the veterans walk away from him

McCain has long ago used up any respect earned as a prisoner of war. He has become a bungling fool.

Understand, but as a USNA grad myself, I don’t mind taking that shot at McCain. He even admits his poor performance in his autobiography.

Likewise, John Glenn was good at flying, but he never should have been a Senator.

Trump has a mean streak. He can have my wife, she’ll tone him down.

Wonder ((IF)) John McLaim wasn’t the Vietcongs “snitch” in Hotel Hanoi?..

He surely IS some ones “bitch” in Congress..
An absolute embarrasment to the people of Arizona..

AN an embarrassment to Sarah Palin for even being associated with him..
A name no doubt not spoken in the Palin household..

A distinct lack of judgement on her part..
Sarah run for Senator NOT President..

BOTH Alaska Senators are traitors..

I’ve studied Patton seriously. I like the man and wish there were some others like him. We are SERIOUSLY in need of warriors now, not the “negotiating, political, soft spoken Eisenhower type.” Think about it. Our demise as a nation began with Eisenhower’s softness...and I helped elect him the second time. Shame on me. I believe Patton could have been president......but he was “eliminated.” Look what the wussies did to MacArthur as well.

I agree....should have kept his mouth shut about the POW...but for sure McCain has been milking this ever since. I’m sick of McCain’s reaching across the aisle to make deals with the devil and always wondered if it had something to do with his POW days.

McCain’s cell mates at the Hilton have nothing good to say about the little prince.

Do NOT lecture me

YOU and wardaddy are discussing a scenario in which Patton put down POWs along with Ttrump

Patton would NOT have said that

He would never have stated that

GETover yourself and get off my case

Patton would not have said it

McCain has done a far better job at dishonoring himself than Trump could ever do.

Not for McCain he won't. You're absolutely correct. McCain has used his VN experience to explain/legitimize every idea he's had since.

It's fair game. Same as the "searing" experiences Jean F'n Kerry drags out every week.

If you want to talk about these things you shouldn't' get pizzed when somebody takes you up on it.

McCain has been milking this.
The wise person realizes that the other POWs don’t do what McCain has done with it

Many of them have served in congress and in local politics on the merit of their character and patriotism not wartime leadership

On the one hand, never disparage a POW for being a POW. Bad move, Trump.

Totally agree.

I don’t like John McCain, but I would never step on the honor of an American POW. Unforgivable. Trump is trash.

He’s a war hero all right—for the North Vietnamese. He crashed several planes and severely damaged an aircraft carrier, almost sinking it.
