Democrat Jim Webb gets it right as he breaks ranks with the fashion of the moment

Jim Webb, Reagan’s former Secretary of the Navy, former Virginia Senator and oft mentioned Democrat candidate gets it right regarding the great battle flag issue.

You see, other than his political history, Jim is a historian. I read his book “Born Fighting," a book which gives the history of prominent Scots Irish people in our nation’s history. Ronald Reagan, Andrew Jackson among others. He respects history and he and I exchanged emails after I congratulated him on his work.

Here are some of Mr. Webb’s comments. It is a brave moment for Mr. Webb but also a refreshing one. He is a person standing up for what he believes is correct even though he is out of step with the fashion of the moment. He also happens to be exactly on point.

From the Daily Caller;

“ (we must) respect(s) the complicated history of the Civil War,”

“The Confederate Battle Flag has wrongly been used for racist and other purposes in recent decades. It should not be used in any way as a political symbol that divides us.”

“We should also remember that honorable Americans fought on both sides in the Civil War, including slave holders in the Union Army from states such as Missouri, Kentucky, Maryland and Delaware, and that many non-slave holders fought for the South. It was in recognition of the character of soldiers on both sides that the federal government authorized the construction of the Confederate Memorial 100 years ago, on the grounds of Arlington National Cemetery.”

Mr. Webb, being a former Navy Secretary, might have mentioned that Robert E. Lee had a nuclear submarine named after him in 1956, but now they call for his statues to be razed. . Which begs the question, “What changed?”

This whole notion of getting rid of this flag is totally misplaced. If we are going to do something with substance, we should ban the political Party that upheld slavery without apology.

It is the Democrat Party that has this heritage of hate. No Republican EVER held slaves - ONLY DEMOCRATS. The Democrat Party has NEVER apologized for slavery! If we are going to ban anything meaningful because of slavery - BAN THE DEMOCRAT PARTY !!!

Democrat primary voters do not value free thinkers.

They value political correctness and marching in lockstep.

Webb had a very slim chance to begin with. Now he is effectively sunk.

Socialist Bernie Sanders is the only one left standing in the way of the Clinton machine juggernaut.

Besides, the problem is not the Democrat party. They are simply doing the bidding of their “diverse” membership. The Republican party is the one selling their supporters down the river.

Hmmm. Okay, so let me get this straight. If “we” find something to patently offensive all we have to do now is demand any and all references to it erased? Well, I find that slavery was really offensive so I guess we need to remove all reference to it from the history books and take down any plaque or monument referencing it and viola, evathing thang goin’ be awright. Dang that was easier than I thought. Now, moving on to the offensiveness of the dem party........... :>}

With the doctrinaire blockheads on the left this most certainly will not compute. To them, life is like a Disney movie where the bad guys are the bad guys - no nuance, no acceptable alternative perspective.

Their whole worldview crumbles into the fever swamp of their minds if they allow their brains to engage.

Because when a muslim commits an act of terror, he is not representative of Islam. But when a lone white Southerner commits a crime, he is representative of Jesus Christ and all white Christians, especially southerners and/or males, worldwide, for all time.

Now there is a real Democrat idea. If you disagree, ban it.

I agree, but whatever the agenda/premise/argument/etc., is, it needs to be addressed - we cannot ignore it. until we control the agenda/premise/argument/etc., we are stuck fighting on their terms.

I happen to think Admiral Bill Halsey was one of the greatest fighting men this country has produced, and he has had schools, roads, bridges, etc. named after him, and rightfully so.

It isn’t too much of a stretch to think of a circumstance where he becomes a persona no grata because during the war he unleashed tirades of what would today be called racist vitriol.

His memory and what he stood for are dear to me. But I don’t have to think too hard to see a situation where someone agitates to have his name removed from a school or road somewhere.

Look at what we have now. Just thirty years ago, people would have thought you were insane if you described a fraction of the weirdness we see today with respect to this type of “cleansing”.

Not too intelligent, but cute.

You have a better idea than to point out what really should be done rather than banning the Confederate battle flag, then do it. I say countering with a slogan to ban the Demorat Party evokes the history of that Party.

If you have a better idea on how to address Demorats that try to hang that flag and its perception of slavery/segregation/racism on Republicans - bring it to the table. Otherwise, I suggest you keep your liberal remarks to yourself.

Whatever the agenda/premise/argument/etc., is, it needs to be addressed - we cannot ignore it as you have. Until we control the agenda/premise/argument/etc., we are stuck fighting on their terms. You have a better idea, instead of your quips to join the Demorats?
