S.C. state lawmaker: I'll introduce bill to take down Confederate flag

South Carolina state Rep. Norman “Doug” Brannon (R) said Friday night he plans on introducing a bill to remove the Confederate flag near his state’s capitol building.

The legislation was inspired by Wednesday evening’s mass shooting that claimed nine lives at historic black church in Charleston, S.C., he said.

“I’m not a politician tonight,” Brannon told host Chris Hayes on MSNBC’s “All In” on Friday evening.

“But I do have access, and I will introduce that bill in December,” he said of the proposed change in state law. “I will pre-file that bill in December when we go back into session.”

So, the Confederate battle flag is the problem? Really?

157 years - Slavery existed under the British Union Jack in the British colonies of North America (1619-1776)

87 years - Slavery existed under the American Stars and Stripes (1776-1863) until the Emancipation Proclamation was issued on January 1, 1863

2 years, 4 months - Slavery existed under the various flags of the Confederate States of America from 1863 until the war’s end on April 9, 1865

Is there any rational person out there who honestly thinks that if the Confederate flag had been removed ten years ago then Dylann Roof would not have murdered those people? The rush by these politicians to try and push through a worthless gesture that is going to piss off as many people as it appeases is further evidence that we elect morons to office.

STOP IT!

You’re trying to use logic and thought. This is an emotional issue, so you may only use knee jerk reactions and feelings.

When I run for office, I’ll introduce a ban on ugly flowerpots and stupid looking glasses. That’s obviously what led him to kill.

Just over four years - February 1861 to roughly mid-June 1865.

Slavery wasn’t outlawed (by Presidential decree) until January 1, 1863. Thus, 2 years, 4 months.

If elected, I'll introduce legislation to outlaw drugs ... since that probably had more to do with it than his Glock or Hyundai.

It’s all about racial symbolism just like the myth of “hands up, don’t shoot.” They know they’re pandering to a substantially illiterate underclass who are given to urban myths and folklore.

You could vote to outlaw cheeseburgers....and it’d have the same effect of outlawing the SC flag. Within the state, even if you subtract the flags....there’s still at least a thousand reminders of the period prior 1865. Will we dismantle those as well, and if you do....will it finally halt racism or violence?

Remember, the Emancipation Proclamation applied ONLY to those States the North did NOT control. It did not apply to Border States or Northern States. There was nothing keeping them from declaring it in 1861 in the States the North controlled.

But, slavery wasn’t really their issue.

FYI.

If they truly wanted to honor him and what he stood for, they would build a Clementa Pinckney memorial - a statue of the Hon. Rev., surrounded by his eight companions, with the Confederate Battle flag in his loving hands, and an inscription on the base saying, “I forgive you.”

But this isn’t really about honor and healing, it’s about scapegoating and effeminate anger - qualities the gunman had in spades.

Excellent question. I would like for someone to ask Jeb! and Romney that question at a news conference.

Lot of that going around.

This better be a non-starter. For all of our sakes.

Mr. Brannon is not worthy of his position, much less in So. Carolina. Hope he gets raked through the coals for his stupidity.

haven’t followed too much...but is Storm his middle name as indicated under the pic...if so ya think that might have something to do with his warped demeanor?

No always the guns and the flag...why don’t we just wipe out all of history including the continuing black crutch “slavery”
