MORE TECH HELP NEEDED! Copied Outlook from old computer to new computer - but ... :-(

Posted on 06/12/2015 2:10:49 PM PDT by Maceman

As I previously posted, my Dell Vostro 3550 crashed 7 weeks ago, and after a very frustrating extended relationship with Dell, they decided to send me a replacement computer -- albeit a different model (Latitude E6540.

Both the old Vostro and the new Latitude run Windows 7 and MS Office 2010.

Long story short: I used Windows Easy Transfer (with Belkin Cable) to transfer files from the Vostro to the Latitude -- Success!

Now I am trying to get my Outlook data into the Outlook on the new computer. I found my Outlook.pst files in the My Documents folder on the Latitude (there are actually a couple of different ones).

I imported the Outlook.pst file, and was thrilled to see all my emails show up.

BUT -- now my individual contact folders and contacts are not showing up in the Outlook contact folder. Well, one does, but I have many, many others that I can't find or get to show up.

I noticed that the import dialog box did show the name of some contact folders during the import process. So it would seem that they did get imported. But I can't find them anywhere.

Can anyone help me? PLEEEEEEEEEEEEEZE? Thanks in advance.

Good luck! I remember doing that a while back. I had a full head of hair when I started. I succeeded eventually but I couldn’t tell you how. I did find afterward that there is a neat command that transfers everything with one easy click. I wish I had seen that before I even plugged the new computer in. I’ll know better next time (assuming I remember it, of course).

You need your .nk2 file off your old machine

Probably named outlook.nk2

That pst will contain your contacts but the nk2 will contain all auto complete email addresses

Google how to import it. You need to place it in its original location and run this command

Outlook.exe /importnk2

Export and import your contacts separately... to a csv file. Don't remember exactly how to do it off of the top of my head but it should be pretty easy.

Whenever I have transferred my outlook files I have always had to transfer the contacts separately.

If I can find some old notes I’ll pass them on. Went through that last year and the only trouble I had was with the contacts / address book. It took a quite a while to find the solution.

Why r u bothering with importing? Just copy the .pst file to your new location and map outlook to the file/new location.

Pretty easy actually.

drunknsage is absolutely correct. It's a bug IMHO that Outlook doesn't store the autocompletion history in the contacts folder; not just for this reason, but because it would also be nice to be able to prioritize and edit it easily.

Don't listen to any other posters on this thread. They are mistaken.

It actually could be good because: 1) it will clean up bad indexes and 2) automatically upgrade to the newer higher capacity .pst if the target Outlook is newer than the old one.

Any, it's never a mistake.

Still won't get what most people think are their "contacts." He needs the autocomplete file as well.

If you actually enter everybody you correspond with as a contact, it’s a non-issue. But most naive users don’t.

In Outlook 2010 Export first

1) Left click on the “File” tab at the top

2) Left click on “Options”

3) Left click on “Advanced”

4) Left click on “Export”

5) Left Click “Export to a file”

6) Left click on “Outlook Data File (.pst)”

7) Left click on “Outlook Data File”

IMPORTANT **Be Sure that “Include subfolders” is checked below.

8) You many want to export this to your desktop. What’s important is to remember where.

9) Left click on the radio button “Replace duplicated with items exported”

10) Left click Finish

In Outlook 2010 Import next

1) Left click on the “File” tab at the top

2) Left click on “Options”

3) Left click on “Advanced”

4) Left click on “Export”

5) Left Click “Import from another program or file”

6) Left click on “Outlook Data File (.pst)”

7) Import the file from whereever you have located it.

*note this it the tricky part*

A) I did mine through my Wireless Router from one computer to the next. Although I had to make my PST file “visible” from my old computer desktop in order to import it to the new computer.

8) Left click on the radio button “Replace duplicated with items exported”

9) Left click Finish

That is odd. The same thing happened to my contacts when my son transferred my old e-mails. Some contacts showed up , but the ones I used the most did not. He hasn’t come back to see if he can find them.
