Iran has sent 15,000 fighters to Syria to reverse recent battlefield setbacks for Syrian government troops and wants to achieve results by the end of the month, a Lebanese political source has told The Daily Star.

The militia force, made up of Iranians, Iraqis and Afghanis, the source said, have arrived in the Damascus region and in the coastal province of Latakia.

The source said the fighters are expected to spearhead an effort to seize areas of Idlib province, where the regime has suffered a string of defeats at the hands of a rebel-jihadi coalition.

Gen. Qasem Soleimani, the commander of Iran’s elite Quds force, was in Latakia this week to shore up preparations for the campaign, the source said.

Assad is running out of Alawites to fight for his regime, basically 1/3 of Alawite men of fighting age have been killed.

However, Iran cannot afford a Sunni Caliphate on its border.

One of the reasons that is stated for why Germany's birthrate is so low is that they lost so many men in WWI and WWII that they never made up for with any type of German Baby Boom.

If lots of Middle East Muslim men are killed in battle, and there is no subsequent baby boom, then they could be looking at low birth rates. Then they can go back to being nomads drifting from oasis to oasis.

Maybe the populations of Iraq and Syria will be decimated if the war continues but other places, not much of an impact at all...

My understanding is that ISIS threatens Assad which threatens Iran's regional ambitions. Seems like a good old fashioned mob/turf war hidden behind a religious facade.

Maybe not, as Muslim men aren’t limited to one wife. They can have several pregnant wives at the same time.

“Maybe the populations of Iraq and Syria will be decimated if the war continues”

And maybe muzzies from nests all over the world will go back there to fight for whichever side - who cares - and further reduce their numbers. This could actually help save modern civilization which is too wimpy and stupid to realize self-preservation is a GOOD thing.

If I remember correctly, the Alawites are the Christian Syrians? So in other words, ISIL and the other counter Assad groups are going to eventually pull another genocide on another arab Christian group?
