U.S. Special Operations forces killed a senior ISIS commander during a raid intended to capture him in eastern Syria overnight Friday to Saturday, sources familiar with what happened on the ground in Syria told CNN.

The ISIS commander, Abu Sayyaf, who was in charge of ISIS' oil and gas operations and directly and increasingly involved in ISIS command and control, fought capture and was killed in the raid, the sources said.

I wonder what the Syrians have to say this morning.

If they have any common sense they'll say 'thank you'.

They still refer to ISIL as a terrorist organization not as Islamic terrorism, yet Islamic is in the name. How stupid do they think we are? Sarc

“Boots on the ground” is another of those tropes like “terrorists” and “terrorism” that have the effect of confusing those who use them about what is going on.

The “boots” have feet in them, and those feet are following somebody’s orders. In the case of Normandy 1944 (for example) the feet in the boots were going to Berlin or to meet the Red Army, whichever came first, per orders from General Eisenhower to destroy the armed forces of Germany and then to occupy and govern her.

In the case of Vietnam and Iraq, the boots were wandering around waiting to get killed or maimed to demonstrate how serious the asses in the chair were about their fantastic “nation building” or “counterinsurgency” unicorn hunts.

Confucius said, “the beginning of wisdom is to call things by their right names”.

Either Obama was upset that the terrorist had more integrity and leadership ability than him, or he didn’t like that the Islamic leader was telling the truth about the murderous religion.

I prefer the term ISIl because it is more correct. The nations of Iraq and Syria no longer exist as before. There can be quibbling about the definition of Levant but it is just quibbling. The area in question is in the Levant

By using the term Levant the new de facto country is described for what it is. Neither Iraq nor Syria will ever return to the previous borders. By using the term, Obama is recognizing the fact. It is not his doing and he has no need or desire to change.

Further, neither the remaining portions of Iraq nor Syria have the ability and perhaps the desire to return to the previous borders. The current battles are about settling the borders.

The future is long ahead. Once the nation is established, the Arab nations will cleanse it of the Islamic radicals that are undesirbles

"Levant" is a region of the middle east where the state we know as "Israel" isn't shown. Using it is a way that Obama can diss Israel.

Didn’t we also “capture Osama’s wife”? What ever happened with her?

Supposedly we are the enemy of the secular Assad regime even though we are fighting the same enemy in the Islamic State.

Mine too. I’m thinking this *leader* is as bogus as “The Khorasan Group” they created out of thin air last fall.

“U.S. personnel based out of Iraq conducted an operation in al-Amr in eastern Syria to capture an [ISIS] senior leader known as Abu Sayyaf and his wife Umm Sayyaf,” according to a statement from the White House. “During the course of the operation, Abu Sayyaf was killed when he engaged U.S. forces.”

I don’t have a problem if the new country is called Sunnistan as long as Islamic State doesn’t run it.

Carter said he had ordered the raid at the direction of President Barack Obama. All the U.S. troops involved returned safely.

Yep, old "Blood & Guts" Barack directing operations.

Syrian state media earlier reported that Syrian government forces killed at least 40 IS fighters, including a senior commander in charge of oil fields, in an attack Saturday on the country's largest oil field — held by IS.

It was not immediately clear why both Syria and the U.S. would claim a similar operation in the Omar oil field. The U.S. has said it is not cooperating with President Bashar Assad's government in the battle against the Islamic State group. But it has always said it gives the Syrian government a heads up on operations within its borders.
