Obama Highway Plan Paves Way For New Tolls Nationwide
The Daily Caller ^ | April 1, 2015 | Peter Fricke

A little-noted provision of President Obama’s highway funding proposal would lift the federal prohibition against states imposing new tolls on existing interstate highways.

The GROW AMERICA Act would eliminate restrictions held in place since the creation of the Federal Interstate System, according to a summary of the plan’s provisions, allowing states that receive permission from the Secretary of Transportation to toll existing Interstate highways “in order to make improvements or to manage congestion.”

Since its creation in 1956, interstates have been funded primarily through fuel taxes, with tolls banned on all sections of highway built after that date, according to The Alliance for Toll-Free Interstates (ATFI). The only exception is a 1998 program available to three states, none of which have taken advantage of it to date.

Tolling done wrong—as government jobs (or public-private partnership jobs, just as bad), to throw a sop to public sector unions that ought not exist.

Illinois is going to get worse. No studded tires, no guns, highway robbery sales tax and now more tolls are going to make it a State to drive around.

And if this goes through, you KNOW that CA, MD, and NY will be the first three states in line to pick our pockets. Greedy, foul sonsofbitches!

Does anyone know when the tolls to build the San Francisco Golden Gate Bridge paid off the loans taken out to build the bridge?

It was in the 1970s. The tolls are still being charge today, some 40 year later.

The closest thing to immortality on the face of God’s green earth, is government taxation, levies, and tolls.

When someone tells you they need to charge you a new toll, just try to use this rule of thumb.

How did this get paid for during my parents and grandparents life? Why can’t it be paid for that way now? What has changed?

Folks, do we really want to pay hundreds of dollars to drive coast to coast on toll roads? Our parents didn’t have to. Why should we?

We are way to easy when it comes to new taxation.

I'm sure California will start implementing the ‘water conservation and re-distribution toll’ on interstates to help pay the bill for coming up with even more reclaimed water to use on the greenery along the highway. Whatcha think, a buck a mile sound fair?

We've already paid for these highways, we've already paid for the upkeep of these highways, yet politicians want to promise more benefits to unions, come up with ‘living wages’ that are far beyond the median wages in the areas where construction occurs, and they happen to already have run out of our money to do all this with, so the obvious answer is - more of our money to run out of!

How about a use tax for public transportation? Only counts against the tax credits and refunds.

What domestic highway wishes to volunteer to become the the obama memorial highway. The only prerequisite is to be available almost immediately and accommodate at least one crater.

Michigan’s Big Mac Bridge financing is similar.

I know there is upkeep on these bridges, so I don’t honestly think some sort of toll couldn’t be reasoned. San Francisco uses the funds on the bridge, but also in the general revenues for the city. I’m not a big fan of that.

The Pennsylvania Turnpike tolls have become totally ridiculous and very expensive,, A trip from Somerset, PA to York, PA..a couple hundred miles now cost almost 20.00 one way...

Made a trip from Somerset PA. area to the Ohio turnpike line this week, cost was $8.60 then you travel some 32 miles for ‘FREE’ lol to get on the OH. turnpike, which is also ridiculous tolls, on the return trip to PA. you pay a fee for that so called ‘FREE’ trip of $6.80 for 32 miles...they make up for the so called free ride on your ride to Ohio...

Then you get on turnpike and pay another $8.60 to get to Somerset area...actually get off at Donegal area... all in all a round trip is getting to cost almost $35.00 to go see hubby Doctor at Cleveland Clinic. a trip of 220 miles one way...

I travel often from PA. to Atlanta GA. on Interstates...the only state I pay a toll is in West Virginia..$2.40 but it will go up ridiculous too. I feel certain after reading this article...

THANK YOU HUSSEIN OBAMA FOR THE DESTRUCTION OF AMERICA

LOL, works for me. Other cities have bridges too. In fact San Francisco has other bridges, and I believe some of them are toll free. I may be wrong on that as I’ve only crossed them a few times.

0 is by far the most destructive and worst president this nation has ever seen and continually widens the gap to ensure that no one else will ever come close.

Your story sounds like mine in Florida. I wanted to travel down state and across state. We must have gone through five to seven toll booths in each direction.

Another thing folks may not think about, is that this sets up a perfect spot to stop traffic any time they like. For some reason, I just don’t like giving government that kind of control.

It wreaks of total control.

As the article states, if it's pre-1956, they can get away with it.........imagine if they tried to impose tolls on I-95, running the length of the Eastern seaboard.

The tollway has parts of I-90 and I-87.
