You touched on the major problem.
Those cards are abused all the time, and the checkers get nothing but grief when they try to keep people honest.
I’ve been in line behind some of those people, and invariably the ones I’ve been behind always have a problem and hold the line up.
After a while the checkers cringe to see another EBT card customer headed toward them. Who could blame them?
Out here we have a problem with people who are well to do, hiding any evidence of wealth with their adult children. Then they get government services although they live in a massive home, have a relatively new expensive vehicle, and gold chains hanging off their body.
Then these folks get almost violently angry when they are asked for co-pays or the like at healthcare agencies.
If people are courteous, generally they are cut some slack. If not, it’s human nature to be angry at them.
I have personally witnessed three insidents.
1. Person tries to use the EBT card for forbidden items. They throw a temper tantrum and this holds the line up. Everyone wants to ring their neck.
2. Guy and his wife come to a hospital pharmacy. He’s wearing gold chains, an expensive gold watch, and an expensive suit. She’s dressed to the nines. They are asked to pay a $10 co-pay on a prescription and he goes nuclear. Can’t get the meds unless he forks over, so he pulls out a roll of cash about 1.5 inches thick. He pays trashing the person serving him relentlessly, as if it’s her policy.
3. It’s a junior college and I want to take some classes. I’ve registered and the lady at the counter was very nice. Just in front of my inline is a young kid dressed rather well. His fees are $25.00 and all he’ll say to her is one word, meaning he wants the state to pay for it. He gets his way. The lady looks at me like, can you believe this idiot. She never says a negative word, and just our eyes meeting told me volumes.
We’re being had, and have been for decades.
The other day a young girl (early 20s) in front of me was dripping in jewelry (probably just costume) talking on a smartphone and paying for her food with an EBT card. I didn’t say anything but I did notice other people looking askance at her.

The Food Stamp program was created because elected officials were shocked at how many young American men were entering the military with health problems caused by malnutrition. Bad teeth, weak bones, even scurvy. It was a national disgrace in a nation with so much fertile farmland and an over-abundance of food.
It’s not the poor who are sucking up our tax dollars. It’s the massive, bloated bureaucracy that has grown up around the program. For every dollar given to a food stamp recipient, about eighty dollars go to the fat, well-entrenched bureaucrats who run the program.
Everyone knows if you take govt money you take the govt strings that go with it. They always say that to conservatives when they complain about the strings if they accpet highway money and school funding, and are forced to do stuff they don’t like.
Tough sh1t. Don’t take the money. My compassion has run out.

I was rarely wrong.
By my observation, welfare rats would invariably load their carts with convenience foods, junk food, and alcohol and tobacco (which by some miracle, they had cash for which to pay).
I also noticed that the welfare rats were, more often than not, overweight. Not always, just more frequently than those paying for their food from their own earnings.
Caution: the above is from a limited number of observations and have no statistical support. They are suggestive, but are not a valid study.
It would be interesting to see a fair and thorough study done on this topic. Data would be easy to collect, as most transactions are electronic, and most items could be correlated to the method of payment.

That is not anger. Its common sense. You are giving someone “money: earned by someone else because they do not or can not acquire enough food to sustain themeleves with that assiatnce. To allow them to use that for junk food and energy drinks (expensive as hell) would be criminal!They need to buy fod that will provide the nourishment the need.
The anger comes in you you as a person that workd 40 plus hours a week or maybe a part time job besides a fulltime job see someone in line using foodstamps to buy crap and meanwhile they have 2 brand new tattooes, jewelry out the whazoo, a 50 dollar wide brim hat and brand name leather jacket... And we have every right to be angry....

I have NEVER seen that. People rolling their eyes or getting irritated how long it takes someone with an EBT card to get through the shopping line.
Otherwise, it would not surprise me to learn that 9 out of 10 people on assistance do not need to be on it or they could get by with substantially less.
If you are one of the ten who truly need,or have needed, assistance than this does not apply to you.
HOwever, the other 9 out of 10, or whatever the actually number, are criminals. They are defrauding the government (taxpayers).
Possibly workfare and perhaps a incremental decrease of benefits over a relatively short to moderate amount of time would work?
The problem is there will always be a politician willing to extend or increase benefits in exchange for votes.
If you eliminate one program they will just replace it with another.
Emotional blackmail works! A long with a covert implied message that you will give people of entitlement their money or they will commit crimes in order to maintain a certain lifestyle.
I would be willing to take the chance and cut off 70-90% of the recipients off the dole.
Have work programs ready. Have churches on standby for the influx of government assisted lost souls.
