Hertz puts cameras in its rental cars, says it has no plans to use them... against anyone other than those disgusting cigarette smokers.
Fixed it.

A competing rental car company could have a field day with this little nugget. Limitless advertising opportunity.
To: LeoWindhorse
A tiny square of duct tape will fix that.

Easy ad copy for the competition:
We aren’t Hertz. You have privacy.

They are a private business.
The cars are their private property.
No one is forced to rent cars from them.

That's a lot of effort and expense for something to not be used.
So right there I'm calling a Clinton/Obama on Hertz.
I'm not a smoker, but spending that much effort and expense just to catch smokers?
That stinks, I'm calling a B.O. on that, too.

Maybe intimidation — plant the idea that they could be turned on.

Something else I don’t have to worry about. I always drive where I want to go. Haven’t had a rental car in years.

I don't care if they put cameras in their cars or not. As others have noted, they are a private company and there is no law against it. (may run afoul of private laws? seems kinda thin)
What I do have a problem with is their idiotic lie - they have no plans to use them? Right...
So consider this: they just lost the business rental market. You and a coworker going to a business meeting? No discussions in the car, no privacy anymore. Heck, even by yourself, no business phone calls. In a Hertz car you could no longer talk about anything even remotely competition sensitive, or any management issues with personnel (PII anyone?). etc. etc.
I don't know how big of a part of Hertz's revenue business travelers represent, but I'd bet they just lost most of it. They won't be getting my business.
