Canada Delays Opening of Crucial Arctic Naval Port Until 2018

Canada’s military has again delayed the opening of a major new Arctic port, a sign the government is struggling to assert sovereignty over a remote resource-rich region.

The planned deep water naval facility at Nanisivik – some 3,100 km (1,900 miles) north of Ottawa – is one of the key components of Prime Minister Stephen Harper’s “use it or lose it” approach to the Arctic. The port, initially due to open in 2012, will now not be operational until 2018.

From the article:

Canada claims sovereignty over the passage and the port at Nanisivik would help to maintain a presence in the region. The United States disputes Canada’s claim, saying the passage lies in international waters.

They are assuming a clear northwest passage due to global warming. They may find that this is not such a good bet.

Canada might want to rethink that strategy.I’ve read more than once that Vlad Putin is engaged in a not-so-covert effort to control arctic regions rightfully belonging to other nations in order to gain access to the oil widely believed to be there.

Canucks are tough. I’m a bit more than 100 miles north of the border as the crow flies, and we have lakes, trees, and rocks all the time; snow and ice enough of the time; and not much else—Ottawa is about two and a half hours away, and the nearest stop light is a 45 minute trip. We like it that way.

We have an ice rink, a Tim Hortons (a 24-hour coffee shop that is Canada’s largest company by market capitalization and a cultural icon), a liquor store, The Beer Store (yes, that is what it is called), a Church (actually three of them—two Catholic in a town of 1200), moose, deer, and bear—when combined with the natural assets of the place, what else could a man want? Oh yes, Canadian Girls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8udOf6wCvy8 I’ve got three of my own, not counting my wife, and three boys to match. A full hockey team.

My boss just came back from a two week trip to the south—Ï believe mostly in the DC region. School was being cancelled and delayed due to what the locals down there termed “cold.” We all had a good laugh. If we applied the same standards up here, there would be almost no school between December and mid-March. School up here is never cancelled for cold. Of course, we rarely hit worse than -40, not counting wind chill, so we probably aren’t as cold as the place being considered for the port, but I’m sure our local boys could handle it. It looks like a great place for hockey.

From the 14 day forecast of the nearest place I could find, I’d say that it would be a good idea to wear your toque. http://www.theweathernetwork.com/14-day-weather-trend/canada/nunavut/arctic-bay

Since all the Arctic ice will be gone by 2014 due to man made global warming then it is reasonable to build a Navy base there.
