It what could be another milestone role in broadcast TV diversity, CBS has cast transgender actress Laverne Cox in its legal procedural pilot Doubt.
The Orange is the New Black actress will play a transgender Ivy League-educated attorney, described as competitive as she is compassionate. Shes fierce, funny and the fact that shes experienced injustice first hand makes her fight all the harder for her clients.
The Doubt role was always conceived as a transgender character, and its tough to imagine a better catch for the part Cox made the cover of Time magazine last year in a story about the transgender movement. While there have been plenty of transgender characters on broadcast TV shows in the past, they are often short-term parts or comedic roles.
The castings comes as shows with diverse leads are topping the Nielsen ratings. This season the most successful new drama in the adults 18-49 demo is Foxs hip-hop melodrama Empire, with ABCs legal soap How to Get Away with Murder also a hit. The highest-rated new comedy series if ABCs Black-ish. The push for diversity is impacting pilot season, too, with ABC confirming yesterday that its reboot of the 1989 film Uncle Buck will feature an all-black cast. I got free of cable, no longer watch network tv.
They couldn’t sign Bradley Manning?
I am always amused when encountering a tranny by seeing their Adams Apple bobbing up and down.
Thou shalt not bear falsies against thy neighbor.
I’ve never seen him act. Does he look so like a man, he can only play transgender characters?
It’s pretty funny considering the media never says actress anymore. The only reason they did it here was for squishy, gurgling PC. If it was an actual woman, they’d say actor.
When did it become cool and trendy to be trans whatever???
I guess I’m behind the times. I guess you just haven’t lived until you have had your sex change operation.
Laverne Cox?
Strange name for a transgender woman.........................
Wow! Those aren’t man hands - those are paws.
was just going to say, you are inventing yourself out of whole cloth, can call yourself whatever you want and you choose LAVERNE?
Nope........not going there.................must RESIST!..................aaaarrrrggggghhhhhhh!!!..................
It was the LAST NAME that intrigued me..............................8^)
Strange name for a transgender woman.........................
Anita Cox or Sofonda Peters would be more appropriate.
Laverne Cox. Really?
Really, that's the name?
Amanda Love would be apropos..............
How about that. How brilliant. They have a trans whatever person playing the part of a trans whatever person. Man you have to hand it to the suits at CBS for coming up with a show featuring a trans whatever character. Of course this is not done to push any agenda.
Sarcasm.
