Obama: States more likely to legalize pot
The Hill ^ | January 22, 2015 | Justin Sink

President Obama believes more states are likely to legalize marijuana following efforts in Colorado and Washington state.

"My suspicion is that you're going to see other states look at this," the president told YouTube blogger Hank Green.

Obama said that the federal government was "not going to spend a lot of resources" enforcing federal marijuana laws in states that had decided to legalize the drug. He also noted that the Department of Justice was examining how to shift policies for nonviolent drug offenders.

In an interview with The New Yorker last year, Obama appeared to tacitly endorse a Colorado referendum that legalized marijuana in the state.

The president said that it was “important for it to go forward because it’s important for society not to have a situation in which a large portion of people have at one time or another broken the law and only a select few get punished."

In the same interview, Obama said he did not think pot was more dangerous than alcohol, although said he still saw use as “a bad habit and a vice.”

Last December, the White House said Congress should not interfere with local District of Columbia law that would legalize marijuana in the capital city as part of the so-called cromnibus. But Obama did sign the budget bill including those restrictions.

Awesome, Bambi is acknowledging one of the areas where the federal government has exceeded it’s authority.

Those who love liberty and don’t get off on bossing people around should be pleased.

I wouldn’t have had a problem with this 30 years ago when people were smart enough to make decisions and were held accountable for their actions. In the present state of affairs, this just compounds the current issues that are sucking the life out of this country. This will just add to those that aren’t willing to work, but still have an entitlement attitude. We are swirling the drain people.

Its too bad Hawaii didn’t legalize pot when he was in his 20s. He probably would have had a different career.

I don’t see Gov. Abbott of Texas doing this, not even medical. It’s already easier to buy pot here than bud light, so what’s the use?

Yes, this is what we should be focusing on, freakin’ weed. Today I read about Obummer giving $11 billion freakin’ dollars to Iran and then read another article where vets are stilled being massively screwed over at the VA, being made to wait 1200 days on disability appeal cases, and to top it off we had the White House accusing Bibi of spitting in The Ones face (I wish) and Lurch Kerry once again insisting radical Islam is not Islam.

Has there ever been a president who decided arbitrarily which federal laws he would decide to enforce and which he would ignore? I can’t seem to find an example anywhere in our history.

George H. W. Bush made up a no-net-loss-of-wetlands regulation practically out of whole cloth. Then there were the George W. Bush signing statements.

You won’t see many states legalizing medical marijuana after the WA State experience. It is not the first step to a legal marijuana industry.

What has happened in WA is that people would rather buy the untaxed, home grown weed on the Black Market from the licensed medical growers. The Commercial growers are losing money. They called in the Feds to do a little asset forfeiture for them, but now I read that Holder says that the feds are out of the asset forfeiture business.

“The president said that it was “important for it to go forward because it’s important for society not to have a situation in which a large portion of people have at one time or another broken the law and only a select few get punished.””

I know it’s Obama’s argument (or more like his speech writer’s), but that’s a good argument for marijuana legalization there - something like 40% of the entire population has tried it at sometime, and a significant percentage of young people use it regularly. But only a few, and disproportionately the poor and minorities at that, ever get arrested or convicted for it. Ruining someone’s life with a criminal record for possessing some plant material and causing no harm to anyone else seems, well, counterproductive IMO.

That’s my opinion, anyway. I know there are many who would disagree, for a variety of reasons.

Yeah, I heard a story about that on the news the other night. I didn’t see it mentioned here on FR, although I’m sure it was. If nothing else, dismantling the asset forfeiture scam would be a good thing to come out of the Obama/Holder regime.
